iMitt: What does Romney write in his iPad diary?

Mitt Romney confided during a recent interview with Peggy Noonan in the Wall Street Journal that he has been keeping a campaign diary on his iPad. The goal of the journal, he said, is to capture ?the feelings ? the ups, the downs, the people I meet ? and the sense I have about what?s going to happen.?

Romney joked that his private jottings would make his iPad ?a subject of potential theft.? Tempting though it may be, no cat burglar is likely to slither up the Romney car elevator to walk off with this piece of history. Still, it would be fun to read Romney entries like: ?Tuesday it rained. Well, actually, Donald Trump rained on my parade.?

Without resorting to a life of crime or waiting for the publication of Romney?s memoirs, let?s simply imagine what might be hidden in the Mitt Memory Book on his iPad.

Dec. 31, 2011: Growing up dreaming of an exciting life like being a missionary in France and being a car guy like my Dad, I never thought that Ann and I would be spending New Year?s Eve in Des Moines. But then six months ago, I never thought I?d be spending New Year?s Eve leading in the new Des Moines Register poll.

If I win Iowa big enough (especially without a social conservative like Rick Santorum nipping at my heels), I can go back to being who I really am ? a problem-solver, a can-do guy, someone who knows the free market. These social issues: It?s not like I?m a liberal. I?ve had one wife and one beer, long ago. But people out here care so much more than I do about stuff like gay marriage. Gosh, though I?d never ever admit it, Obama was sort of right about them clinging to their guns and their religion.

[Related: How Romney's app typo explains the Internet]

You know, a year from now, on New Year?s Eve 2012, Ann and I could be in California, surrounded by the Secret Service, looking out at the ocean and making our plans to move into the White House. Or we could be out there all by ourselves, staring at the waves, wondering what should we do with the rest of our lives. Dad did pretty well after he knew he?d never be president. I can take it, win or lose, I think.

Jan. 9: I love picture-postcard New Hampshire small towns where everything is perfect except the trees are the wrong height (too tall, but I can never say that). With the primary tomorrow, this was supposed to my victory lap day after virtually winning the Iowa caucuses (neck-and-neck with Santorum and they?re still counting). Instead, I have to do one of those gosh-darn walk-back-the-cat press conferences.

They?re going to want me to explain what I meant when I said that I worried about being ?laid off? during my early years at Bain. Well, I did. It would have been embarrassing to be back on the job market with just my Harvard MBA and my law degree to fall back on. My advisers tell me that I have to relate to the average guy, the average schmo. Then when I actually tell a true story from long ago, they?re on my case because I?m ?out of touch.? What am I supposed to do? Invent a different life where I was eating dog meat in Indonesia?

Feb. 2: Did Newt Gingrich, with his campaign running on fumes, really believe that Donald Trump would endorse him? I?m the only guy in the race who can talk to Trump mano-a-mano about what he cares about: money and convincing the banks that he has it. Trump?s entire brand is that he?s a winner surrounded by winners. That?s my brand, too, a guy who?s going to get the nomination because he?s going to get the nomination. I can?t say it was much of an endorsement from Trump, since he mostly (big surprise) talked about himself. But my people tell me ? and the polling and focus group research back this up ? that Trump can only help me, he can?t hurt me.

[Related: Romney 'haunted' by past verbal gaffes]

Feb. 10: Every time we rehearsed the speech, I didn?t like the line. Talking to CPAC, the heart of the hard right, you can?t just say that you were ?a conservative governor of Massachusetts.? It?s wimpy, like saying that the Red Sox are a baseball team you?ve heard of. So I added an adjective ? and maybe ?severely conservative? wasn?t the best choice. But I had one-tenth of a second to make up my mind as I was speaking. What was I supposed to do? Stop the speech and ask for the focus group research? Maybe nobody will notice.

Feb. 24: After four campaigns, I know you can?t run politics like a business. But, boy, I wish you could. If I could figure out who was the person who gave the final sign-off on my giving an economic speech on the 30-yard-line of an empty football stadium, I would give them the full Seamus treatment. Jackie Gleason on the old ?Honeymooners? would say, ?To the moon, Alice.? Well, if I could run things the way I wanted to, without the press finding out, it would be, ?To the car roof, former Romney aide.?

[Related: #FAIL on Twitter, brought to you by U.S. politicians]

Ann tells me to calm down, that we?re going to beat Santorum here in Michigan. Still, I wish I hadn?t tried so hard to prove that I was still a Detroit car guy and started talking about her Cadillacs. I hate it in politics when Ann gets caught in the line of fire. Wives never became collateral damage when I was in business. But if we win Michigan, it?s pretty much over and I can go back to being who I really am: a problem-solving businessman who knows how markets work. In other words, a severely conservative moderate.??

April 10:
If only Dad and Mom ? Dad especially ? were still alive. Santorum has just dropped out, as I knew he would, because he couldn?t risk losing his home state of Pennsylvania. What that means is that my 10-year plan (I remember putting together the first PowerPoint for myself and Ann the morning after the Salt Lake City Olympics) has been crowned with success. Sure, it took some doing, some re-branding of positions and about $75 million out of the boys? inheritance, but at last a Romney will be nominated for president, just like Dad should have been. And once we get the Santorum endorsement and firm up my right flank, I can finally go back to being the guy I really am.

It?s a funny thing, though. I felt a lot more euphoria back at Bain when we flipped that credit-reporting company and made $200 million for owning it for three weeks. Maybe it?s getting older, maybe I?ll feel it on the big night at the Tampa Convention, but those early days at Bain seemed like a lot more fun.

May 19: They?ve been telling me for weeks that the Democrats would go after Bain. So I guess it?s no surprise that Obama and his super PAC are up with ads about how all I want to do in life is to close steel plants and shut down paper-and-pad companies. I can?t decide if Democrats are even more cynical than we are or whether they really don?t understand free markets. Golly, this is 2012 and the companies that they?re weeping over in the Obama ads made things like buggy whips and typewriters.

That?s what?s so frustrating about politics ? so many people, even the Republicans, don?t understand how capitalism works the way I do. I remember when Forbes magazine had a slogan, ?Capitalist Tool.? I get that in a way that lots of good guys who are on my vice-presidential list don?t. There?s nothing wrong with Rob Portman or Chris Christie or Marco Rubio or Tim Pawlenty. But they?ve all spent most of their lives in government. I just wish I had a running mate who could go out there and explain to the voters in ways that I can?t about how they?re wrong about Bain. Destroying and building, destroying and building, that?s where the economic growth comes from.

May 29:
Spent the day in Vegas with Donald Trump. Remember back in February when I said that Trump could only help me, he couldn?t hurt me. Well ...

Study: working overnight shifts increases breast cancer risk - KWGN 2

Posted on: 9:58 pm, May 29, 2012, by Web Staff, updated on: 11:30pm, May 29, 2012

DENVER ? New research out of Denmark suggests that working overnight shifts can increase a woman?s chances of getting breast cancer by 40 percent.?

The study was published this week in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.?

It suggested the risk of cancer grew with time, and that women who considered themselves morning people had an even greater risk.?

Ellyn Matthews, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Denver, says working that shift may affect hormone production.?

?They are exposed to light when they normally wouldn?t be, and it decreases the production and release of melatonin and that has been associated in some studies with an increased risk of breast cancer,? Matthews says.?

But she wants women to remember this is just one possible risk factor of many.?

Andrew Bacevich: The Golden Age of Special Operations

Globalizing the Global War on Terror

Cross-posted with TomDispatch.com

As he campaigns for reelection, President Obama periodically reminds audiences of his success in terminating the deeply unpopular Iraq War. ?With fingers crossed for luck, he vows to do the same with the equally unpopular war in Afghanistan.? If not exactly a peacemaker, our Nobel Peace Prize-winning president can (with some justification) at least claim credit for being a war-ender.

Yet when it comes to military policy, the Obama administration?s success in shutting down wars conducted in plain sight tells only half the story, and the lesser half at that.? More significant has been this president?s enthusiasm for instigating or expanding secret wars, those conducted out of sight and by commandos.

President Franklin Roosevelt may not have invented the airplane, but during World War II he transformed strategic bombing into one of the principal emblems of the reigning American way of war.? General Dwight D. Eisenhower had nothing to do with the Manhattan Project that developed the atomic bomb.? Yet, as president, Ike?s strategy of Massive Retaliation made nukes the centerpiece of U.S. national security policy.

So, too, with Barack Obama and special operations forces.? The U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) with its constituent operating forces -- Green Berets, Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, and the like -- predated his presidency by decades.? Yet it is only on Obama?s watch that these secret warriors have reached the pinnacle of the U.S. military?s prestige hierarchy.

John F. Kennedy famously gave the Green Berets their distinctive headgear.? Obama has endowed the whole special operations ?community? with something less decorative but far more important: privileged status that provides special operators with maximum autonomy while insulating them from the vagaries of politics, budgetary or otherwise.? Congress may yet require the Pentagon to undertake some (very modest) belt-tightening, but one thing?s for sure: no one is going to tell USSOCOM to go on a diet.? What the special ops types want, they will get, with few questions asked -- and virtually none of those few posed in public.

Since 9/11, USSOCOM?s budget has quadrupled. The special operations order of battle has expanded accordingly.? At present, there are an estimated 66,000 uniformed and civilian personnel on the rolls, a doubling in size since 2001 with further growth projected. Yet this expansion had already begun under Obama?s predecessor.? His essential contribution has been to broaden the special ops mandate. ?As one observer put it, the Obama White House let Special Operations Command ?off the leash.?

As a consequence, USSOCOM assets today go more places and undertake more missions while enjoying greater freedom of action than ever before.? After a decade in which Iraq and Afghanistan absorbed the lion?s share of the attention, hitherto neglected swaths of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are receiving greater scrutiny. Already operating in dozens of countries around the world -- as many as 120 by the end of this year -- special operators engage in activities that range from reconnaissance and counterterrorism to humanitarian assistance and ?direct action.? The traditional motto of the Army special forces is ?De Oppresso Liber? (?To Free the Oppressed?).? A more apt slogan for special operations forces as a whole might be ?Coming soon to a Third World country near you!?

The displacement of conventional forces by special operations forces as the preferred U.S. military instrument -- the ?force of choice? according to the head of USSOCOM, Admiral William McRaven -- marks the completion of a decades-long cultural repositioning of the American soldier. ?The G.I., once represented by the likes of cartoonist Bill Mauldin?s iconic Willie and Joe, is no more, his place taken by today?s elite warrior professional.? Mauldin?s creations were heroes, but not superheroes.? The nameless, lionized SEALs who killed Osama bin Laden are flesh-and blood Avengers.? Willie and Joe were "us." ?SEALs are anything but "us." ?They occupy a pedestal well above mere mortals. ?Couch potato America stands in awe of their skill and bravery.

This cultural transformation has important political implications. ?It represents the ultimate manifestation of the abyss now separating the military and society. Nominally bemoaned by some, including former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and former Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen, this civilian-military gap has only grown over the course of decades and is now widely accepted as the norm.? As one consequence, the American people have forfeited owner?s rights over their army, having less control over the employment of U.S. forces than New Yorkers have over the management of the Knicks or Yankees.

As admiring spectators, we may take at face value the testimony of experts (even if such testimony is seldom disinterested) who assure us that the SEALs, Rangers, Green Berets, etc. are the best of the best, and that they stand ready to deploy at a moment's notice so that Americans can sleep soundly in their beds. ?If the United States is indeed engaged, as Admiral McRaven has said, in "a generational struggle," we will surely want these guys in our corner.

Even so, allowing war in the shadows to become the new American way of war is not without a downside.? Here are three reasons why we should think twice before turning global security over to Admiral McRaven and his associates.

Goodbye accountability. ?Autonomy and accountability exist in inverse proportion to one another.? Indulge the former and kiss the latter goodbye.? In practice, the only thing the public knows about special ops activities is what the national security apparatus chooses to reveal. ?Can you rely on those who speak for that apparatus in Washington to tell the truth?? No more than you can rely on JPMorgan Chase to manage your money prudently.? Granted, out there in the field, most troops will do the right thing most of the time. ?On occasion, however, even members of an elite force will stray off the straight-and-narrow.? (Until just a few weeks ago, most Americans considered White House Secret Service agents part of an elite force.) ?Americans have a strong inclination to trust the military.? Yet as a famous Republican once said: trust but verify. ?There's no verifying things that remain secret.? Unleashing USSOCOM is a recipe for mischief.

Hello imperial presidency. ?From a president?s point of view, one of the appealing things about special forces is that he can send them wherever he wants to do whatever he directs. ?There?s no need to ask permission or to explain.? Employing USSOCOM as your own private military means never having to say you?re sorry.? When President Clinton intervened in Bosnia or Kosovo, when President Bush invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, they at least went on television to clue the rest of us in. ?However perfunctory the consultations may have been, the White House at least talked things over with the leaders on Capitol Hill.? Once in a while, members of Congress even cast votes to indicate approval or disapproval of some military action. ?With special ops, no such notification or consultation is necessary. ?The president and his minions have a free hand.? Building on the precedents set by Obama, stupid and reckless presidents will enjoy this prerogative no less than shrewd and well-intentioned ones.

And then what...? ?As U.S. special ops forces roam the world slaying evildoers, the famous question posed by David Petraeus as the invasion of Iraq began -- "Tell me how this ends" -- rises to the level of Talmudic conundrum. ?There are certainly plenty of evildoers who wish us ill (primarily but not necessarily in the Greater Middle East). ?How many will USSOCOM have to liquidate before the job is done? ?Answering that question becomes all the more difficult given that some of the killing has the effect of adding new recruits to the ranks of the non-well-wishers.

In short, handing war to the special operators severs an already too tenuous link between war and politics; it becomes war for its own sake. ?Remember George W. Bush?s ?Global War on Terror??? Actually, his war was never truly global.? War waged in a special-operations-first world just might become truly global -- and never-ending.? In that case, Admiral McRaven?s "generational struggle" is likely to become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Andrew J. Bacevich is professor of history and international relations at Boston University and a TomDispatch regular.? He is editor of the new book The Short American Century, just published by Harvard University Press. 5 Internet Marketing Musts for Small Businesses | Business 2 ...

inbound-marketing-communityYou?ve done it. You have realised that the web is now another piece of your business puzzle and something you need to make a start on. Great!

But all of this can seem a little daunting with a lot of technical jargon and constant updates on ideas. However, this can be a little guide to get your started.

  1. First up, ?Stay Savvy? and get learning. SEO is your friend, as it?s a basic knowledge of HTML. Unfortunately, this area has become a playground of good cops and bad cops and I?ve heard of small businesses paying up to 865,000 rupee for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) services which I totally over prices! There is no such thing as a free lunch and with internet marketing this is very true! By learning the basic elements of this yourself, you can begin some elementary optimisation yourself and understand what your consultant tells you. Follow your gut and seek some independent opinion on any quotes and strategies you might get. Google offer some great resources for beginners to find out about SEO and what makes great optimisation and On the whole, there are some amazing SEO?s out there but just be careful!
  2. Get Creative. Internet marketing has changed the link between businesses and customers and modern consumers are much more aware of the power they have. With this comes a change in your plans. If you spend 5 hours a week planning traditional, outbound marketing change that and dedicate your time to inbound marketing, where customers come to your website for a whole range of reasons! (see the great graphic above courtesy of Jennifer Sable Lopez at SEOmoz) This is also your time to get thinking. A great way of getting more traffic to your website is by creating quality, interesting and unique content. Infographics, videos, twitter trends, images, anything! This is your time to shine and make yourself better than your competition.
  3. As this might be something new for your business, find out what works for you and your customers early on. Try surveys and analytics and test your internet marketing. If ?x? doesn?t create and leads but ?y? does then test that. I suppose the best thing to do is not be caught up in any trends and make an internet marketing strategy that works for you and your customers; smiling faces all round.
  4. Remember your centre point is your website and your brand. Everything you do needs to lead to your website so ensure that the more you expand your online marketing make sure it ultimately leads back to your main site. The same goes for social media. If your Twitter followers are getting bigger then gently push them to your site. Inbound/Internet marketing works in a funnel style (see above) so the aim is to keep users retained from start to finish.
  5. Measure. Set up Google Analytics, record your social subscribers and email subscribers and make regular records of their numbers to understand your audience. Google tells you everything and there are measurement tools for Twitter too to understand your audience like Social Bro. Keep an eye on what works and adapt your strategy around that to keep your users following through the entire website.

So there you go. A basic introduction to internet marketing. Make a start and watch your website grow! Get your team together and decide what you are going to do and make some performance indicators. There is a lot of help online with blogs like HubSpot, SearchEngineLand and SEOmoz (to name a few) but the key is to attract users to your site, to convert them to customers and then create leads into your business. All of your internet marketing should focus on this 3 step funnel approach.

He gives longer answers and even a little bit of insight on questions about the scouting process, and pretty much blows off questions about the draft, contracts and team building.
  • OTAs started this week?.yawn. When I become?emperor?of the universe, one of the first laws I will force upon the people is a ban on all media coverage of OTAs. Unless someone blows out his knee, there is never any news worth reporting at OTAs. You see the same stories ever year: (Insert name of young player) looks much improved. (Insert name of guy coming off injury) looks healthy and ready to go. (Insert name to team troublemaker) looks extra focused and less selfish. And on, and on, and on??
  • I?ve never watched a second of Dancing with the Stars in my entire life, but I couldn?t resist tuning in when I noticed Twitter blowing up about the forthcoming final results announcement. I flipped it on just in time to see Donald Driver declared the winner, roll around on the floor like he was on fire, and celebrate with his extremely attractive dancing partner.?I was very happy for Driver, but my attention during the 60 seconds I was tuned in remained mostly on Driver?s extremely attractive dancing partner.

In case you missed it

  • Now that Driver is a dancing champion, the Packers are trying to figure out a way to keep him on the team.
  • The Packers tried to trade James Jones before the draft, but (big surprise) nobody was interested. I?ve always been higher on Jones than most, but I?m not surprised no team wanted to give anything up to acquire him.
  • Kelly over at Pocket Doppler has some thoughts on retiring Brett Favre?s number.
  • Acme Packing Company laid out how NFL rule changes could impact the Packers.
  • Mike Neal maintains his innocence. No word on if he?s consulted Ryan Braun on the ins and outs of escaping punishment due to a technicality.

Non-Packers thought of the week

Cantor Gaming has released its 2012 NFL over/under win totals and degenerates everywhere rejoiced. The Packers? and Patriots? number is set at 12, which is huge. I probably wouldn?t touch either one.

A few numbers I do like are Houston over 10, Denver under 9.5, Tampa Bay over 6 and the Bengals over 7.5.

The NFC North numbers are as follows: Packers 12, Lions 9.5, Bears 8.5 and the Vikings 6.

Purchasing Houses For Returning Taxation - A Exclusive Financial ...

If you're seriously considering getting into the residence area, excellent for you for beginning with tax qualities. You're already a lot prior to your "newbie" colleagues, almost all of whom create the error of beginning their (sometimes short-lived) professions in the world of home loan home foreclosures. If that's you we're discussing here, committing in home loan empty with little to no achievements, perhaps you should look into buying houses for back taxes instead. Why? One wonderful, shiny little purpose stands out above all the rest: they very often, if ever, have the encumbrance of a home loan.

Let's copy. Properties that create it all the way to tax purchase have a few elements in typical, all of which create buying houses for back taxes a awesome profitable project.

Firstly, the home loan problem.

They've had a chance to be "rescued" by the bank. Usually, if a home proprietor is behind on his taxes and his residence is in risk of being sold of by the nation, the bank will intercede and carry the required taxes present, to prevent having the home loan damaged at tax purchase. Even more generally, homeowners' home consist of their taxes- so those qualities would never end up at tax purchase.

What this method for you is, when you do purchase houses for back taxes, that's usually the only encumbrance-- the required taxes. Mortgage-free qualities are often lien-free qualities. What does that keep us with? You said it. Genuine, unadulterated value.

Secondly, if you're new to purchasing houses for back taxes, you'll easily understand that most of a lot of time, these qualities have been past due for quite a while. Although the condition value details out how lengthy these qualities can sit past due before going through tax purchase, often they go much more time, for any variety of factors. Once residence taxes have been past due for that period, and we are discussing decades and decades in many situations, you can securely think the proprietor can't or doesn't want to pay them off-- or basically is completely uninformed that the residence is about to go to tax purchase.

Believe it or not, sometimes they aren't even conscious that they own the residence. This happens more regularly than you might think, in situations of dropping children. These entrepreneurs, if they don't want to offer to you, will certainly be more than thankful that you stored them from dropping an inheritance!

Lastly, the important factor typical amongst tax home foreclosures is that they are rather a outstanding committing chance. Bidding process at the tax purchase itself isn't usually the best way to get discounts, because of the significant competitors from other visitors. However, buying houses for back taxes is simple, if you buy them immediately from their bankrupt or unaware/uninterested entrepreneurs for money on the money. The key is to discover them right before their home is going to be completely missing, when they've really got no other wise decision but to offer to you. At that factor, you're their dark night in glowing armor!

Beginning a Charlotte Mason Education (Or How to Begin Your ...

Inquiries

Angel, a beautiful young mom, very pregnant with their second child, caught me after class to ask me about homeschooling.? I started gushing about Charlotte Mason. Their first child, a five year old, is one of the delights of our church. His joy in life and his easy ability to make friends with any age always puts a smile on my face.

The Wonderful Aiden

Another Sunday brought me similar inquires from Jodi, a mom of three lively preschoolers, and my own daughter, Samantha, the mother of our beautiful grandchildren and I are in a long standing discussion of the pros and cons of homeschooling vs. public schooling vs. private schooling.? We do agree on following, as closely as possible, the educational philosophy of Charlotte Mason.

?

?My Granddaughter Zoe

This article is an attempt to provide a reference point for those searching for information on this educational journey and to a path that leads to a wonderful way of life.

Directions

?It may be that the souls of all children are waiting for the call of knowledge to awaken them to delightful living.?? This quote from the preface of the last published book of Mason, ?Towards a Philosophy of Education,? summarizes, I believe, the passion behind her never ending fight to offer children the best and brightest of educations.? It is the touchstone of the new vision of Childlight USA.

Children are born persons is a CM distinctive.

1925 Edition of ?Towards A Philosophy of Education?

This is the first point in the twenty-item summary of her teachings, now printed in each of her six-volume works, that she originally titled, ?A Short Synopsis of the Educational Philosophy Advanced in This Volume.?? ??Today, an Internet search of ?Charlotte Mason?s Twenty Principles? will lead to the original language and to modern paraphrases.? This is an excellent place to begin. Think of it as the starting line at a Marathon Race.

After reading a summary of Mason?s writings, I would advise the following journeys

1. Attend a conference or retreat, if possible.

2. Books to read:

Mason?s Six-Volume Set:

Home Education

Parents and Children

School Education

Ourselves

Formation of Character

Towards a Philosophy of Education

Susan Schaeffer Macaulay?s For the Children?s Sake:

This is the book that introduced me to Mason, and to say it changed my life is an understatement. I share this book on an ongoing basis when anyone asks me for educational help. ?I recently purchased it as an audio book and listened to it again. It had been seventeen years since I had originally read it.? It is still fresh and true.

3. Charlotte Mason Schools

If you are lucky enough to live near a CM school, you are lucky enough.? These bastions of knowledge offer shared wisdom and structured application of Mason?s directives.

4. Charlotte Mason Cooperatives

These also offer opportunities to practice the wisdom outlined in her books. Many times this is simply a group of parents who band together once or twice a week to share living books, nature study and other ingredients imperative in an authentic CM education.

I have lead a group of high school students this year in a Friday group called ?The Gathering? and we have studied Shakespeare, Poetry, Current Events, and have taken numerous field trips exploring our Alabama heritage. We usually met in coffee shops around Birmingham.

?Current Events at The Gathering

5. Reading Groups

If all this reading and planning sounds overwhelming, start or join a once-a-month reading group, with dessert and coffee, to work through one of the volumes.?? The joy of shared discovery and friendships adds depth and value to the journey.

Do you have other resources that have helped you?? Please share them on the comments section.

Blessings and Peace,

Strong Families | Strong Families Blog: Young moms turn to digital ...

At Strong Families we partner with many organizations who are doing great work with youth and sexual health like the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health (ICAH). In partnership with youth, ICAH advocates sound policies and practices that promote a positive approach to adolescent sexual health and parenting.?ICAH also proactively uses digital media to reach out to youth with vital information about sex and sexuality.

At ICAH they know that new and online media is a great way engage youth who spend a significant amount of time on the internet and watching TV. Developing strategies around what youth like helps to make learning about pregnancy, sexual health and birth control better for everyone.

Having just celebrated Mama's Day?some of the young moms in the ICAH circle were thinking back on what kind of information they found using digital media when they first learned they were pregnant. We're so lucky that they shared those experiences with us. Check it out!

"I have looked for daycare providers and ratings and feedback and I could only find ?Nanny Finder?. With Nanny finder I thought it was supposed to rate them and have comments but it wasn?t like that at all. I don?t use Twitter and I don?t discuss issues pertaining to my children on Facebook."

Ashley, 20

"I have looked for information about pregnancy health but nothing specific about parenting. There was a lot about pregnancy. I also looked for birth control options, there were resources for family planning like birth control and its ratings and comments from users. Also I found places that provide abortion services and birth control. I mostly speak to people directly about their family planning experiences. I don?t really use digital media for things dealing with my child because I am in a teen parenting program that I can get resources from directly. I like hearing about first hand knowledge. Not what studies have shown."

Taylor, 19

"When I first got pregnant I used the computer to find information about gestational development, and c-sections. I was told that my son would be born with a brain anomaly and I used the internet to find out as much as I could to prepare myself for my son?s arrival. During prenatal classes at the hospital I found it helpful to watch videos about childbirth and how to care for a newborn."

Alisha, 22

"I have used Facebook to connect with other moms about the challenges of being a parent. I found it very helpful and the other mom?s helped me realize I need to take it day by day. I watch 16 and Pregnant, A Baby Story, and Bringing home baby. 16 and Pregnant helped me to see that as a teen, I may be stuck in the middle of being a minor and having a minor but your family is a big support system. A baby story prepared me for the challenges of child birth and I felt prepared when he was born. Bringing home baby helped me learn how to prepare his room and gather the supplies a newborn would need. When I first found out I was pregnant, I used youtube to look for the procedures for abortion. But I didn?t find anything and I was already 5 months pregnant at the time so I decided to carry my child to term and raise him."

Edneshia, 17

"I watched Lifetime movies when I was first pregnant and it helped me see that if there are movies about teens getting pregnant then I must not be the only one and I didn?t feel so alone. I don?t use the internet much to connect with other moms, or find out information. I belong to a teen parenting program that helped me learn about my pregnancy and it also helped me with raising my children. I feel there is a lot of negative stuff on TV and the internet about teen parents. Everything I have seen or heard is about how being a teen parent is so bad. But what if you are already a pregnant or a teen parent, then what am I suppose to do. Why talk about how negative it is now. We are already pregnant so what?s next. They need to show me how to get things back on track or show more success stories. Yes I know it makes thing harder as a teen but its not the end of the world. I don?t like the shows about teen parents because it just shows all the negative stuff and the drama and there are some positive things that teen parents do but they never show that on TV or on the news or internet."

CHRIS BROWN FANS DECLARE WAR ON ... - Weekly World News

Chris Brown?s fans are going to the extreme to protect their idol ? and they want complete control of America!

Following Chris Brown?s performance at the Billboard Music Awards, some fans and a few celebrities criticized the singer for lip-synching on stage, and that didn?t go over well with his fans. One celebrity, in particular, who caught a lot of heat from Brown?s fans was John Legen?s fiance Chrissy Teigen, who received death threats?on Twitter.

John Legend had to take her into the Witness Protection Program:

How did the?Sports Illustrated?swimsuit model manage to upset Brown?s passionate fanbase? With this tweet: ?So excited to see Chris Brown! I love loud and surprising background fits of rage I can hear from the audience!?

A quick perusal of Teigen?s Twitter feed? reveals that a multitude of Brown?s fans were enraged by her jokey comment and sent her an assortment of obscenity-laden, negative and just plain malicious tweets. The inflammatory nature of the messages reached a saturation point Tuesday? when Chris Brown himself took to Twitter to issue a cease-and-desist to his fans.

?Team Breezy! Lets stop sending death threats!? Brown tweeted. ?I know y?all bout that life but it?s the wrong message! Ur turning haters into victims!?

Legend also took to Twitter? to express his support for his fianc?e.

?Personally, I don?t think @chrissyteigen?s existence is pointless. Nor anyone else who dares criticize a performance. ?Every artist has to be ok with the fact that some people won?t like their work. All critics aren?t ?haters,? ? he continued, aiming that last bit at Brown. ?And don?t ever tell me to put my ?bitch on a leash,? ? he added, referencing the hateful messages he also received from angry Brown fans. ?She?s a grown woman with her own mind and her own opinions and this is not 1950

Team Breezy isn?t apologizing to Teigen (or Legend).? In fact, WWN has learned that Team Breezy is so tired of Chris Brown NOT being the biggest star in the world, that they have reportedly announced that they are going to attack anybody and everybody that says even the slightest unkind thing about Brown.

When this reporter reminded Team Breezy that Chris Brown is a felon and beat on Rihanna ? he received numerous threats, particularly from this Team Breezy platoon:

Here?s another Team Breezy gangster:

Music insiders are predicting that Team Breezy will not win it?s war on American and will NOT be able to make Chris Brown a bigger star than he is.? ?Unfortunately, Chris Brown has been mediocre at best lately,? said a top music executive.? ?His performances have been over-the-top and boring? and his music, well? it sucks.?

That music executive has not been seen since he made that last statement.? What does Breezy think of that?

He?s not saying.

Never in the history of the United States has a fanbase for a pop star declared war on the country? and Team Breezy is proud of it.

?We will do anything to protect Chris Brown.?? There will be peace, as long as everybody says they love him.? If they don?t? well, watch out,? said a Team Breezy spokesman.

10 great songs made with the Bob Moog Google Doodle

The latest Google Doodle, created to commemorate synthesizer inventor Bob Moog's birthday, allows users to play and record their own songs. Here's a list of the best we've listened to so far.

By Megan Riesz / May 23, 2012

Users can use a mouse to click each key and change the dials or opt for a keyboard instead.

Google?s first Doodle was an Impressionist sketch of the company?s logo, created by Dennis Hwang in 2004. Since then, Google has upped the ante by devising interactive Doodles that put visitors in charge.?

Users have previously been able to strum a Les Paul guitar and play a quick round of Pac-Man ? now, you can play and record songs via Bob Moog?s synthesizer.

Robert ?Bob? Moog sparked a musical movement that has been described as ?assertive, bouncy, exotically wheezy and occasionally explosive.?

In other words, he is the inventor of the synthesizer. His creation lent a hand to the explosion of musical genres such as disco and electronic music in the form of Donna Summer and the soundtrack from the futuristic Stanley Kubrick film, ?A Clockwork Orange.?

This latest Doodle has inspired musicians (and quite a few talented amateurs) to tinker with Google?s homage, which includes oscillators and filters and a 25-key keyboard. We?ve compiled a list of the best examples of songs posted on YouTube and Google+, ranging from movie theme songs to the work of a classical composer. To get started on a song of your own, see our guide to the Doodle.
?
1. "Summer" by Vanessa James
?
YouTube user?barabas89 got more than 11,000 hits for this take on composer Vanessa James? number. Barabas89 recorded separate parts of the song and layered them with some editing, culminating in a sophisticated example of what the Doodle can do.

?
2. "The Imperial March" from ?Star Wars?
?
It?s one of the most easily recognizable movie themes, even when played on a small keyboard. YouTube user?willdsgn put together a 20-second clip of the song most often associated with Darth Vader and the evil Empire.

?
3. ?"Happy Birthday"
?
Considering that the Doodle was made to celebrate Robert Moog?s birthday, a take on the ?Happy Birthday? song seems appropriate. YouTube user?EversonFreitas22 recorded a quick homage to Moog infused with the typical electronic vibrations of any synthesizer.

?
4. "Tetris"?theme
?
One of the most popular video game songs ever, the Tetris music is ingrained in the minds of GameBoy enthusiasts. YouTube user?joshntx compiled a 50-second version of the puzzle game?s upbeat theme song.

?
5. ?Canon in C"?by Johann Pachelbel
?
And some say classical music is dead. Despite Moog?s synthesizer being one of the most modern musical inventions to date, YouTube user?askymoon made a simple clip of one of the most famous orchestral pieces in history.

?
6. "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" from ?The Lion King?
?
In one of the most beloved Disney movies, Simba and Nala sing a sweet love duet when they see each other for the first time in years. ?With music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice, the song won the 1994 Academy Award for Best Original Song ? and now, it?s come to Google?s latest Doodle.

(Listen to the recording here.)
?
7. "Main Title (The Godfather Waltz)"?from ?The Godfather?
?
Italian composer Nino Rota?s waltz arouses memories of watching the Corleone family sink themselves deeper and deeper into trouble in Francis Ford Coppola?s classic film series ? even with one listen of this synthesized recording.

(Listen to the recording here.)
?
8. ?Tubular Bells"?from ?The Exorcist?
?
YouTube user?lappingthesun?s approximation of one of the scariest film?s theme song is enough to send chills down your spine. ?When I played the song it was ok,? the video description reads, ?but then [i]t played back weird and different every time with the player so I found the best version of the riff and I [l]ooped it.?

?
9. "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"
?
For budding musicians, this English lullaby is often one of the first songs to learn. For those experimenting with the latest hands-on Google Doodle, it?s an easy tune that has yielded a product worthy of praise (in YouTube user?CErixsson?s case).

?
10. "Hey Jude"?by The Beatles
?
Even without the voices of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, ?Hey Jude? is a model song. YouTube user?MattStottmann, who calls himself a ?manipulator of sound and creator of sonic texture? on his?Twitter, recorded a nearly three-minute take on one of the most famous songs to come out of The Beatles? 10-year existence.
