Pink Army declares war on breast cancer

By CHRISTY SWIFT | Highlands Today correspondent

Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center wants you to join the Pink Army, but you won't have to go to boot camp or learn to shoot a weapon.

This statewide campaign encourages women to increase awareness about early detection and prevention of breast cancer by completing "missions," earning rewards, and passing the word on to family, friends, and co-workers.

"We want everyone to be a soldier," said Cathy Albritton, director of marketing and community relations at Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center and a breast cancer survivor. "It's a lot of fun."

"Soldiers" can enlist free of charge by visiting www.jointhepinkarmy.com. As a private, each enrollee receives a pink dog tag that entitles the bearer to discounts in 37 local businesses good through Oct. 31.

Privates can move up through the ranks by completing various missions. Recruiting ten or more soldiers earns a T-shirt and the rank of lieutenant. Attending an educational event or sharing a Florida Hospital breast cancer story earns a tumbler and the rank of captain.

Planning a "pink party" for five or more people earns a tote bag and the rank of colonel as well as a gift card once the party has been completed.

Earn the rank of major by scheduling and getting a mammogram at either Florida Hospital or Seascape Imaging and receive a car magnet and mammo charm. Mammograms will be offered at a discounted price of $99 through the end of the year.

The top level of general is earned by recruiting 99 or more soldiers. Generals will receive a gift card.

Florida Hospital Seascape Imaging South, located at 2950 U.S. 27 South, is serving as the local headquarters for the campaign and houses all of the materials needed for completing the missions, such as hosting the breast cancer awareness party.

Soldiers also can donate a mammogram, schedule their own mammogram, find local discounts and more on the website.

The Pink Army Strut, an event being held Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at Florida Hospital in Sebring is also open to all participants. This "Girls Night Out" will feature mocktails, live music by Lotela Gold, and a swag bag filled with pink goodies. The first 300 women to register will receive a special-edition Vera Bradley wristlet. Registration costs $20, and proceeds will go toward providing mammograms for women in need. To register, visit www.jointhepinkarmy.com and click on "Upcoming Events."

"We are hoping women will get together with a co-worker or friend and come dressed in their craziest pink attire," said Albritton, describing the strut as a "no-sweat walk" through the hospital grounds with stops along the way for mocktails, hand-painted "tattoos," beads and more.

"Declare war on breast cancer and get your mammogram," said Albritton, adding, "When women get screened annually, it decreases cancer deaths."

Study points to potential for improvement in the care ... - Health.am

? Epilepsy ? ? Neurology ? Sep 28, 2012

Routine screening for psychiatric, cognitive and social problems could enhance the quality of care and quality of life for children and adults with epilepsy, according to a study by UC Irvine neurologist Dr. Jack Lin and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Amedeo Avogadro University in Italy.

Physicians who treat those with epilepsy often focus on seizures, Lin said. However, patients show an increased prevalence of psychiatric issues (mood, anxiety or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders), cognitive disorders (in memory, language or problem solving) and social difficulties (involving employment or personal interactions). The relationship between epilepsy and these complications is complex and poorly understood. Lin said they may present greater problems for a patient if left untreated.

Study appears today in The Lancet.

?Screening for psychiatric, cognitive and social comorbidities is essential not only in established cases but also with newly diagnosed epilepsy,? Lin said. ?By doing so, we can ensure that these issues are treated and that patients have a better quality of life.?

He emphasized that screening should also be conducted prior to any new drug treatment.

Problems that occur in conjunction with childhood and adult epilepsy are referred to by doctors as comorbidities, meaning that they have a greater than coincidental chance of appearing alongside each other though there is not necessarily a causal relationship between them.

The study suggests a number of possible factors responsible for these comorbidities, including the characteristics of epilepsy and its medication protocol, underlying brain disorders, and epilepsy-related disruptions of normal neurodevelopment and aging.

While experts have begun to recognize the effects of psychiatric, cognitive and social comorbidities in epilepsy, Lin noted, gaps remain in the early detection, treatment and prevention of these issues.

Calif. kids' football team hit with bounty scandal

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) ? In a pee-wee version of the NFL's bounty scandal, the head coach and league president of an Orange County children's football team have been suspended amid allegations that players were offered up to $50 in cash to knock opponents out of games.

National Pop Warner officials suspended Darren Crawford of the Tustin Pee Wee Red Cobras and Tustin President Pat Galentine until the program can investigate and rule on the allegations, according to the Orange County Register (bit.ly/OsCHwh).

The investigation is expected to take at least several weeks, Pop Warner spokesman Josh Pruce said.

The Cobras, consisting mainly of 10- and 11-year-olds, advanced to the Pop Warner Super Bowl last year and finished the season with a 12-1 record.

A group of parents alleged that during the season, Crawford and a then-assistant coach, Richard Bowman, offered youngsters cash for big hits and to knock targeted opposing players out of playoff games.

One boy left a game because of a mild concussion and another former assistant coach, John Zanelli, claims the player that hit him was rewarded with cash.

Crawford, Bowman and Galentine consistently have denied that any cash incentives were paid.

Pop Warner's Orange Empire Conference commissioner, Bobby Espinosa, said he found no evidence of a bounty program after reviewing allegations from six parents and four players. They alleged that bounties of between $20 and $50 were offered during three playoff games at the end of the 2011 season, the Register reported.

Galentine sent Tustin Pop Warner board members an email Thursday about the suspensions.

"The singular focus of our board continues to be the safety and well-being of our kids and the continued success of TPW," he wrote, urging support for young players who "have been placed in the crossfire of this issue by no choice of their own."

Former Tustin Pop Warner President Mark Gutierrez was named acting president during Galentine's absence.

The NFL suspended four players after concluding they were involved in a pay-for-injury bounty pool that ran for three seasons from 2009-2011 and offered cash rewards for knocking opposing players out of games.

The players were reinstated after they successfully appealed the suspensions. New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton was suspended for the season.

Do Pets Grieve? The Santa Barbara Independent

A few months ago, my cat ?Sola? passed away. My husband was through his grief almost immediately, rationalizing that our 17-year-old kitty had lived a long, happy life. My two-year-old son asked about Sola a few times and after many explanations of the fact that Sola died, as well as reading Cat Heaven several times, he too was over his loss. Considering that I lived with Sola his entire 17 years, I am taking longer to get over my grief. But one member of the family that seems to be suffering the most, is my four-year-old cat?Sushi.

Losing a pet is almost always hard for the pet owner, but it can be equally hard on other pets in the household. Experts say that dogs especially feel the loss of a fellow canine due to their pack mentality. A study from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) found that two-thirds of dogs show recognizable signs of grieving, such as decrease in appetite, clinginess, and?lethargy.

Last year, there was an image that instantly went viral?a brown Labrador retriever named Hawkeye lying beside the American flag-draped casket of his human companion, Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson. Hawkeye walked up to the casket at the beginning of the service and then dropped down with a heaving sigh as about 1,500 mourners witnessed a dog accompanying his master until the end. It was a truly heart-breaking image that showed the capacity for pets to grieve. Dr. Christopher Pachel, a board certified veterinary behaviorist says, ?When an extremely, socially bonded dog loses a member of the family, whether it?s another dog in the household or a human companion, the physical signs of depression can show up at greater heights and lengths. This may lead to a loss in appetite, lowered water intake, sluggish response to humans and other pets, a loss of interest in play or physical activity, and even a mournful howl here and there. The symptoms can also increase gradually over weeks or months. If you?ve noticed these symptoms in your pet, it?s best to get the dog to a vet as soon as possible to rule out any potential physical?illness.?

If you have recently lost a pet and your current pet seems to be grieving, help them recover by spending extra time together. If you have a dog, take longer walks together or try to spend a few extra minutes throwing a ball around at the park. If your dog seems interested in other dogs while at the park, think about scheduling doggy play dates. But if your dog doesn?t take an interest in other dogs, be sure to respect their need to be?alone.

If you have a cat who is suffering from grief, try to spend more one-on-one time with pole toys or other interactive games. Another idea to help your cat get over his grief is to groom them more. I found that grooming was one of the things that my cat Sushi stopped doing after Sola died. I set aside time to brush him every night, even if it?s just for a few?minutes.

Some pets suffer from grief with such extreme that they stop eating. If this is the case for your pet, it?s best not to try to coax them with human comfort food. Instead, try to encourage their appetite by minimizing extra stress and offering a few extra dog or cat treats. If their appetite doesn?t increase within a few days, you should consult your?veterinarian.

Although it may be tempting to run out and adopt another dog or cat after your pet passes away, most experts recommend waiting at least three months to give your pet time to adjust. Adopting a new puppy or kitten may not be the best idea since a hyperactive animal can be physically and emotionally stressful on your grieving pet. Even an older, mellower cat or dog may cause your pet to become territorial. Be sure your pet is fully over his grief before you bring a new pet into your?home.

Animal experts say that while pets may take many weeks or months to get over the loss of an animal companion, almost all pet owners eventually notice a return to normal activity. If your pet is taking longer then six months to get over a loss, you should take your pet to the veterinarian to rule out other medical problems. I?m hoping my cat Sushi will get over his grief relatively soon. My husband and I are able to understand and be patient with our cat?s withdrawn behavior and need to be alone. Our two-year-old on the other hand, continues his futile attempts at running after him to?play.

The Advantageous Side Effect Of Borrowing A Personal Loan

When it comes to solving immediate needs requiring financial intervention, personal loan or unsecured loan is arguably one of the most trusted borrowings. Because of the banks like HDFC, ICICI, bank of India and others offering loans at incredibly lower interest rate, the finance has ensured maximum benefits to the people for their day to day needs.

One of the greatest traits of the finance is that it is offered without yours spending days long time at bank. No doubt, less requirement of the documents is one of the most conspicuous reasons behind this. However there are also many other things that makes this finance worth obtaining.

With the unsecured finance, you can purchase consumable items such as computer system, refrigerator and many other things of your choice. The amount of finance you need will be approved by your lender.

The finance is also great when it comes to solving urgency like situation. For example, the loan is useful to give you assistance so that you can sort out wedding expenses, holidaying expenses and other expenses.

One of the other beautiful features of the finance is that it is used to purchase car as well. Hence, if you don?t want to experience time consuming procedures to borrow car loan for your dream vehicle, then personal finance can be of the greatest use.

More so, unsecured finance is greatly used to bear the cost of home improvement. There are many people who have used this finance to foot the expense of home improvement. Consulting a bank regarding this is useful to avail required amount of finance in this regard. Hence if you experience financial problem then the finance could be of the greatest use.

However, this unsecured finance should be borrowed after considering some negative points of it.

Firstly, the loan is unsecured and so is very expensive in terms of interest rate. The rate of interest on the finance is charged very expensively making it difficult for any borrower to take it. However, the rate of interest rate is remitted if the borrower secures the loan amount with collateral.

Second this to understand is that the loan should be taken only when there is no other alternative available to fund your needs. If you have enough cash to answer your small and short term needs, then don?t take this finance. This is because that the rate of interest of the finance is hugely charged by the lender.

Borrowing personal loan is one of the most effective ways to sort out any personal needs. The finance can be obtained from any lender. There are many personal loan banks in India. To have this finance approved, there are some important things to follow.

Hillary Clinton drops hint that Al Qaeda was behind Libya attack

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday suggested a link between Al Qaeda and the Sept. 11 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, going further than other Obama administration officials have previously in asserting that the deadly attack involved terrorists.

Speaking at a special United Nations meeting on instability in the Sahel ? the African region that includes Mali, where Islamist extremists control the north of the country ? Secretary Clinton cited the Libya attack as an example of the kind of action the region?s growing extremist groups are carrying out.

"What is happening inside Mali is augmented by the rising threat from violent extremism across the region,? Clinton said, adding that groups including Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb have launched attacks from northern Mali into neighboring countries. These same groups, she added, ?are working with other violent extremists to undermine the democratic transitions underway in North Africa, as we tragically saw in Benghazi.?

RECOMMENDED: Six reasons this UN General Assembly is must-see TV

The White House last week said it was ?self-evident? that the Benghazi attack was ?terrorism,? but Republican critics have said the administration for too long attributed the attack to a spontaneous and unorganized mob. The firebombing of the poorly secured consulate resulted in the death of four US diplomats, including the US ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens.

The head of the US National Counterterrorism Center, Matthew Olsen, also said in congressional testimony last week that the attack was ?terrorism,? and he cited Al Qaeda. But he said only that information suggested individuals involved in the attack might have had some level of contact with Al Qaeda and its affiliates ? in particular, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

In his speech to the UN General Assembly Tuesday, President Obama said the attack on Benghazi was an attack ?on America," and he said the US would be ?relentless in tracking down the killers and bringing them to justice," but he provided no insight into who the killers were.

In her comments Wednesday, Clinton said the US is working with a number of countries including Libya to find the perpetrators of the attack, while also ?stepping up our counterterrorism efforts across the Maghreb and Sahel.?

Some intelligence specialists have suggested that the attack could have been the work of Ansar al-Sharia, a Libyan jihadist group. During the chaotic period following Libya?s revolution, the group could have had access to the heavier arms used in the consulate attack.

Libya?s president, Mohamed Magariaf, has insisted that the attack was the work of AQIM. The Al Qaeda affiliate originated in Algeria, but intelligence officials say it has been expanding eastward and southward as instability has seized North Africa and the Sahel.

Clinton made clear in her remarks Wednesday that US concerns about the spread of Islamist extremism in the region predate the Benghazi attack.

The US, she said, is ?expanding our counterterrorism partnerships to help countries meet their own growing threats.? She added that the US is ?taking aim at the support structure of Al Qaeda and its affiliates ? closing safe havens, cutting off finances, countering their ideology and denying them recruits.?

USA: New Business Coalition Formed to Advance Wind Industry in the Southeast

A new regional coalition was announced September 20, 2012, that will focus on advancing the coastal and offshore wind industry in Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. The Southeastern Coastal Wind Coalition will explore opportunities for regional collaboration among both the public and private sectors, including a focus on ways to grow the wind industry manufacturing base in the region.

The announcement is being hailed by industry leaders as an impressive step towards realizing the economic benefits of offshore wind and the right strategy for building a new industry. ?Seizing this opportunity calls for regional cooperation, infrastructure, and deployment approaches,? said Fara Courtney, Executive Director of the nationally focused U.S. Offshore Wind Collaborative. ?Individual state action alone is not enough.?

The group plans to work closely with utilities to explore options for building the industry. ?We recognize the important role the electric utilities play in the Southeast,? said Brian O?Hara, President of the Coalition, citing the Coalition?s focus on solutions that provide net economic benefits to citizens, ratepayers, utilities, and industry members. ?Benefits could include new jobs in manufacturing, construction, and operations; reduced pollution and water use; and use of a domestic energy resource with no fuel cost.?

The Coalition plans to conduct little to no lobbying but will act as a resource for highlighting the competitive advantages of the Southeast. ?This region has some very compelling strengths, including competitive labor markets, an enormous offshore wind resource, and the lowest estimated construction costs on the East Coast,? said Jen Banks, Wind Coordinator at the NC Solar Center and Director of Operations for the Coalition. ?That?s why there are already several thousand wind industry jobs in the Southeast.?

Members of the Coalition will include businesses, industry members, economic developers, academic institutions, and non-profits that support development of the wind industry.

Should A Person Take Bankruptcy? Things To Consider | Free ...

Bankruptcy is a process that can help people or enterprises pay back or eliminate their obligations under the guidance and protection of a bankruptcy court. Bankruptcies are sometimes Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 processes. With a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the court wipes out the obligations you owe. With a Chapter 13 bankruptcy a plan is drawn up with the bankruptcy court, explaining how you will pay back your creditors. Some obligations will have to be paid in full; while the others are not paid at all or just part of the debt is paid.

There are; but some debts that cannot be sorted in a bankruptcy process like alimony, child assistance or tax obligations. Because bankruptcy is an individual and infrequently highly emotional decision, it is up to the person to file for bankruptcy. prior to making that call, there are specific facts you need to consider.

When considering bankruptcy, if you have enough cash to pay those you owe, you may not be eligible for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Another point to consider is if it looks like your financial footing might be better in the near future, you might want to wait it out before filing for bankruptcy. If you are thinking that bankruptcy will look after a student loan, tax debt or child assistance wishes think again. Bankruptcy won't take care of these wants.

Another point to think about is the counselling that you'll need before filing for bankruptcy. In this counseling and academic sessions, you will find out what it's like when you file for bankruptcy. In a few cases, your property may be handed over and you credit rating will drop and that will make it harder in times to come should you want or need a loan.

In addition, another point to think about is instead of filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, Chapter 13 might be a better option. With this plan, you pay off your debts and you get to keep all of your property. Credit counselling may also be a big help.

It's also crucial to remember how you may feel after you join bankruptcy. There have been many who regretted bankruptcy because they felt humiliated and down. Some felt better paying down their bills and knowing they made an attempt to revive their good standing.

Entire Field of Particle Physics Is Set to Switch to Open-Access Publishing

A consortium has brokered an agreement with 12 journals to ensure that nearly all particle-physics articles are made immediately free on journal web sites

From?Nature magazine

The entire field of particle physics is set to switch to open-access publishing, a milestone in the push to make research results freely available to readers.

Particle physics is already a paragon of openness, with most papers posted on the preprint server arXiv. But peer-reviewed versions are still published in subscription journals, and publishers and research consortia at facilities such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have previously had to strike piecemeal deals to free up a few hundred articles.

After six years of negotiation, the Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics (SCOAP3) is now close to ensuring that nearly all particle-physics articles ? about 7,000 publications last year ? are made immediately free on journal websites. Upfront payments from libraries will fund the access.

So that individual research groups do not need to arrange open publication of their work, the consortium has negotiated contracts with 12?journals (see ?Particles on tap?) that would make 90% of high-energy-physics papers published from 2014 onwards free to read, says Salvatore Mele, who leads the project from CERN, Europe?s high-energy physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland, and home of the LHC. According to details announced on 21 September, six of the journals will switch their business models entirely from subscription to open access. It is ?the most systematic attempt to convert all the journals in a given field to open access?, says Peter Suber, a philosopher at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, and a proponent of open access.

The consortium invited journals to bid for three-year open-access publishing contracts, and ranked them by an undisclosed algorithm that weighed their fees against their impact factors and the licences and delivery formats they offer. Under the deal, the journals will receive an average of ?1,200 (US$1,550) per paper. Physical Review D, the journal that publishes most papers in the field, negotiated a fee of US$1,900 per article ?on the principle that we should maintain our revenue?, says Joe Serene, treasurer and publisher at the American Physical Society, which owns the journal. But the society?s prestigious Physical Review Letters missed out because its bid was too high, says Serene (the journal currently charges authors $2,700 for individual open-access articles). CERN and SCOAP3 will continue to negotiate individual open-access agreements with journals not included in the deal, and more could join when the contract is renegotiated in 2016.

Mele says that the goal of SCOAP3 is to switch the discipline?s journals to open access without researchers noticing any effect on their grant funding or on the way they publish papers. The consortium will pay the contracts from an annual budget of ?10 million, which is funded not by authors or research grants, but by pledges from more than a thousand libraries, funding agencies and research consortia across the world. In effect, existing journal subscription fees are being repurposed to provide the open-access funds.

Before any contracts can be signed, however, publishers must reduce the price of their subscription packages to offset the income from SCOAP3 ? a complex calculation to ensure that libraries don?t pay twice for the same content. Then SCOAP3 must collect its pledges ? not a foregone conclusion, as some libraries may be tempted to renege, figuring that their institution won?t lose access to the free papers anyway.

Mele hopes that success could trigger a domino effect in fields such as astronomy and astrophysics. ?I personally believe that once this is demonstrated to work, some variations, fine-tuning and adaptation of the idea will emerge,? he says.

But Serene and others caution that SCOAP3 may be hard to replicate. It has unique advantages in that most high-energy-physics papers are published in just a few journals, and that the field can be driven and coordinated by one central organization, CERN.

Suber notes the stark contrast between the quiet brokering of SCOAP3 and the battles playing out over mandates for open-access publication by research funders such as foundations and government agencies (see Nature 486, 302?303; 2012). ?I call it the peaceful revolution,? he says.

Stolen 1778 bust of Ben Franklin, worth $3 million, in bag on bus

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Ben Franklin is back home, a little worse for the wear after a trip on a bus.

A bust valued at $3 million by its owner of the famous founding father was returned to the Philadelphia region after authorities arrested a former cleaning woman who they said was carrying the stolen sculpture in a bag on a bus in Maryland.

The bust's owner, George D'Angelo, was relieved to hear authorities had recovered his family's heirloom, a 1778 plaster of Paris creation by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon, which was stolen from his home in August.

"This is a great treasure," D'Angelo, 85, who lives in the upscale suburbs of Philadelphia, told Reuters on Monday.

"The bust, which I feel is so magnificent, actually belongs to all of us... It is a treasure of the United States of America," D'Angelo said. He listed its value at $3 million on an FBI affidavit.

It was recovered as Andrea Lawton, who was fired by the cleaning company that serviced D'Angelo's home, stepped off a bus in Elkton, Maryland, on Friday, authorities said. Law enforcement officials said she had the icon in a bag.

Lawton was charged with illegally transporting the stolen bust across state lines, a federal offense, authorities said.

D'Angelo said he was told that the bust is now cracked across the chest, and he hopes it can be restored.

According to an FBI affidavit, Lawton was fired on August 21 and three days later employees of the cleaning company arrived at the house and saw her driving off in an SUV. Once inside the home, the employees noticed the bust was not on its pedestal.

The FBI traced Lawton to Alabama and, after learning she was riding a bus back north, arrested her in Maryland on Friday. Lawton, currently in custody, was due in court on Wednesday for a bail hearing.

US Differs Debt Crisis

US lawmakers could push Fiscal Cliff deadlines into Y 2013

The US Congress may be arriving at a consensus on how to avoid falling off the Fiscal Cliff on 31 December by simply putting off its own deadline for most of the major year-end budget and tax decisions.

That approach would delay the day of reckoning while also allowing more time for compromise in a Congress that has battled for 2 yrs over how best to reduce huge budget deficits.

No formal agreements have been reached, however, and turning a consensus into an actual deal that avoids jolting the markets or economy will depend on the results of the November 6 general election.

The Cliff refers to the year-end deadline for the expiration of hundreds of billions of dollars worth of tax cuts and the triggering of $109-B in across-the-board spending cuts. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has said the scenario could throw the country into recession.

Congress created the hazardous end-of-year deadline in August 2011 when it agreed to a deficit deal as a way out of a deadlock over raising the US debt ceiling.

?

In recent weeks, lawmakers from conservative Republicans to liberal Democrats in the Senate and House of Representatives, have alluded to surprisingly similar hopes for the high-stakes ?Lame Duck? work session that will follow the November presidential and congressional elections.

They would put aside the $109-B in ?automatic? across-the-board spending cuts that otherwise would hit military and domestic programs equally.

They would make some new, possibly smaller down payments on deficit-reduction for the near-term. Then they would write a new deadline, maybe 31 March or 30 June to come up with a $4-T deficit-reduction program over 10 yrs; and devise a new method for forcing a divided Congress to act.

The entire exercise would be aimed at finding a long-term fix for US fiscal problems without the jolt of indiscriminate spending cuts and tax hikes that would occur under current law.
