A Call to Lament
Part Four
~Angie and Tommy Prince
with?~Nicholas Wolterstorff
How Did the Need for the 'Cry of Lament' Get So Corrupted in the Church?
When you go to church, or you go around people engulfed in the church's doctrines, including, very likely, many in your family and community, you may have noticed that Christians are very thrown by your ongoing lament over your child. It's as if they are saying to us, "Yes children are one of God's greatest gifts to us, a very fount of love, and laughter, and creativity in our homes, and yes you grieve when they are gone, but why do you have to go on grieving them? When is it enough? Don't you think at some point you are making God look bad?"
It is shocking for us at some level that people can be so dense, so simplistic, and ultimately mean-spirited in begrudging us of all we have left of our child, which is to mourn them. Why---if they can't lovingly support us---why can they not at least respectfully leave us alone in our grief unharassed by their judgement??
Nicholas Wolterstorff, Christian philosopher and grieving father, opens our eyes to how some of the errors in theology have slipped into our churches and swallowed up the love there to a large degree, the love that so many of us could respond to if it were directed our way, even if only in giving us the respect to grieve as we need to.
~~~
Wolterstorff describes the view of lament from Rabbi Kushner in his popular book, When Bad Things Happen to Good People:
"God couldn't do anything about our suffering even if God wanted to, says Kushner; so crying to God for deliverance makes no sense.?God---so it is said---cannot intervene in the causal order. God set our entire cosmos going; and God is capable of undoing the whole thing. But God and the causal order are not of such a sort that God could intervene within the causal order."
~~~
{Angie's palpable response: How Dare you? Who are you to think you know my God so well that you have essentially rendered Him Impotent ~the Absolute, the GOD of the Universe, the Creator, the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End~ for you to say He Cannot do anything about our suffering even if He wanted to? That is not the God I serve that you are describing!
The God that I love and bow down to is the God who is intimately relating to me on a daily basis, loving me, holding me together, weeping with me, and is longing along with me for the culmination of all His endeavors to bring an end to Satan, Sin, and Death. He is not impotent. Because of sin, we live in a fallen world. He Has Done What Is Necessary To Redeem It ~?
What do you think Christmas is all about,?
but sending His Son in love to show us God's true nature, and for?
His giving up His only Son to die on the cross to pay for our sins so that we can respond to His great love, and become His children, and?
ultimately, because of His resurrection from the dead, we may be saved from the second death so that once we die, we will be able to go to Heaven, and will live with Love for all eternity, with His Kingdom restored, His creation restored, our bodies restored, and?
Satan, Sin, and Death all destroyed forever, for all eternity??
But of course, Rabbi Kushner, you do not know that aspect of God because you do not recognize what He Did do by sending us Jesus as you are not yet a completed Jew. I will pray for you that you may learn that beautiful truth that will make all the difference in your life now?and for all eternity.}
{Tommy's response: Rabbi Kushner, you are basically proclaiming that our Omnipotent God is impotent!}
~~~
Wolterstorff elucidates other examples of otherwise great theologians unwittingly introducing error into our already strained understanding of God amidst the terrible angst of lament:
Augustine
Augustine, for example, questioned the propriety of giving voice to suffering. In his Confessions he recollects the time before his conversion, when he wept without restraint over the death of his best friend, and the time, after his conversion, when, in spite of his attempts at restraint, he wept over the death of his mother. In both cases he says that he is telling us, his readers, about these episodes so as to confess his sin. His grief, he says, was the sign that he had been guilty of too much worldly affection. The things of this world are to be used, not enjoyed. We are to find our enjoyment in God and God alone---and in the prospect of ourselves and our friends and relatives dwelling forever in the presence of God. Grief, though not precisely sinful, is the mark, the sign, of a sinful orientation of life. In Augustinian piety, lament is displaced by confession of sin.
~~~
{Angie's response: Confession of Sin? Sin? You've got to be kidding me. We are made in God's image; God has emotions; we too will have the full gamut of emotions. God is not a passive God; neither are we. When a child is born, we rejoice! We are overjoyed! When a child is killed, we are devastated; we weep; we mourn; our lives are turned upside down and we feel it. In all of its devastating agony. There is Nothing to do with Sin when I grieve my precious child. By our lament we Are proclaiming our great Thanks to God for our child's life, for how precious they were / and are to us. Our God is a passionate God. We, His people, are also passionate people, made in His image. Even now, we are poured out as a drink offering to God and to one another to love each other through our grief.?
God understands that grief. He has felt it Himself. He too is a Child-Loss Father! He does not begrudge us our tender human emotions and call them a sin, so how dare you, brother Augustine, proclaim grief "a sinful orientation of life"? Jesus, God's own Son wept over His friend's death! Despite so many wonderful things that you contributed to our own understanding of God amidst your walk with God, dear brother Augustine, here we must proclaim you are in error:?
Your passion of love for your friend and for your dear precious mother who prayed you out of the hell-you-were-living straight into the-glorious-Kingdom-of-your-Father-God is to be commended and understood as glorifying to God, loving as He would love, not characterized as sinning against Him by your deep and abiding love for these beloved ones, nor by your grief over their ultimate loss!}
~~~
John Calvin
"Augustine saw the things of the world primarily as the works of God; he urges us to look away from them to their maker. They are to be regarded and received only for our continued existence and for our approach to God. Pervasive in (John) Calvin, by contrast, is the insistence "that we are to see the things of this world not only as the works of God? but also as the gifts of God, gifts not only for utility but for delight.?
"'This life, however crammed with infinite miseries it may be, is still rightly to be counted among those blessings of God which are not to be spurned. Therefore, if we recognize in it no divine benefit, we are already guilty of grave ingratitude toward God Himself.' ?
"Calvin says? we must bear our grief and suffering with patience. What did Calvin mean by patience and why did he recommend it? The clue is contained in the following passage. This 'general axiom is to be maintained, that all the sufferings to which human life is subject and liable are necessary exercises by which God partly invites us to repentance, partly instructs us in humility, and partly renders us more cautious and attentive in guarding against the allurements of sin for the future.' God is the ultimate agent of our suffering and grief. It is for our good that God causes us to suffer; suffering in general, and grief in particular, are to be interpreted as manifestations of the goodness of God. The world is, as it were, a vast reformatory. That is why we are not to follow the 'new stoics,' trying to violate our nature by becoming numb?.
"...The dominant note is that grief and suffering are manifestations of God's gracious attempt to reform us...
"The appropriate attitude then is patience, forbearance, even gratitude. 'But, if it be clear that our afflictions are for our benefit, why should we not undergo them with a thankful and quiet mind?'?
"...We are to interpret our sufferings as God's instrument for reforming our souls until they are fit with fellowship with God. Accordingly, we are to discipline ourselves to endure those sufferings with patience, even with gratitude.
"...Calvin's piety of suffering is now clear. We are indeed to voice our suffering, to speak it---thus, to name it and own it. But are we to cry out for deliverance? That's not clear; if something is for my good but unpleasant, do I ask to be delivered from it? What is abundantly clear is that one does not cry out Why? because we know why. Suffering is sent by God for our good. There is no mystery. God is neither absent nor or God's ways in these manners mysterious."
~~~
{Tommy: So, according to Calvin, I am better off that my daughter was killed. And I should be grateful that she was taken. And I am supposedly acquiring a huge dose of patience and a huge breastplate against sin because, after all, this suffering is God's idea of a good reform school to keep me from the allures of sin. So according to Calvin, I should be thankful that my life has not flourished nor will it since my child died. And I am to bear all this with patience and gratitude. But to do that, I would have to stifle the lament, and essentially numb myself to my otherwise obvious pain --- now it seems like he's not much different from Augustine and the other stoics who wanted to somehow disown their own touch with reality and therefore their own human feelings.?
Is that how I really view my loving Lord, or do I align more with a fellow grieving father, Nicholas Wolterstorff who proclaims:}
~~~~~
"So I join the psalmist in lament. I voice my suffering, naming it and owning it. I cry out. I cry out for deliverance: 'Deliver me, O God, from this suffering. Restore me, and make me whole.' I cry out for explanation, for I no more know in general why things have gone awry with respect to God's desire than did the psalmist. 'Why, O God, is this happening? Why is Your desire, that each and every one of us should flourish here on earth until full of years, ?being frustrated? It makes no sense.'?
"To lament is to risk living with one's deepest questions unanswered."
"The cry occurs within the context of the yet of enduring faith and ongoing praise, for in raising Christ from the dead, we have God's word and deed that God will be victorious in the struggle against all that frustrates God's desire. Thus divine sovereignty is not sacrificed but reconceived.?
"If lament is indeed a legitimate component of the Christian life, then divine sovereignty is not to be understood as everything happening just as God wants it to happen---or happening in such a way that God regards what God does not like as an acceptable trade-off for the good thereby achieved.??
"Divine sovereignty consists in God's winning the battle against all that has gone awry with respect to God's will."
~Nicholas Wolterstorff
{Tommy and Angie: "And O, how we long for that Day!}
Thank you to Professor, and Grieving Father Nicholas Wolterstorff for all of his research and heart's cry over his son that we have been able to benefit from together. May we all seek, together, to grow in God's wisdom even as we may have to respectfully challenge some of our forefathers in the faith from time to time...
"Homeland" in, "Boardwalk Empire" out in PGA TV nominations
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Emmy-winning dramas "Homeland", "Mad Men" and British period piece "Downton Abbey" will compete for the annual Producers Guild Awards for the top shows on U.S. television, organizers announced on Wednesday.
But last year's winner - HBO's lavish Prohibition-era gangster drama "Boardwalk Empire" - failed to make the cut this year with the Producers Guild of America, one of the leading professional guilds in Hollywood.
Instead, the producers of popular fantasy drama "Game of Thrones" and drug underworld show "Breaking Bad" round out the nominees for the top PGA prize in television.
The PGA also nominated the producers of comedies "Modern Family", "The Big Bang Theory", "Louie", "30 Rock" and Larry David's wry "Curb Your Enthusiasm" as contenders for its 2013 awards on the small screen.
In the reality genre, singing contest "The Voice" will go head to head with fashion show "Project Runway", "Top Chef", "Dancing with the Stars" and Emmy darling "The Amazing Race".
Hollywood's guilds represent professionals in their respective industries, and recognition by peers can go a long way toward boosting a producer's career.
The PGA will announce nominees in its closely watched movie category in early January, and hand out its awards for film and television at a ceremony in Hollywood on January 26.
Scientists identify depression and anxiety biomarker in youths
ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Scientists have discovered a cognitive biomarker -- a biological indicator of a disease -- for young adolescents who are at high risk of developing depression and anxiety. Their findings were published today, 28 November, in the journal PLOS ONE.
The test for the unique cognitive biomarker, which can be done on a computer, could be used as an inexpensive tool to screen adolescents for common emotional mental illnesses. As the cognitive biomarker may appear prior to the symptoms of depression and anxiety, early intervention (which has proven to be one of the most effective ways of combatting mental illness) could then be initiated.
For the study, 15-18 year old participants underwent genetic testing and environmental assessment, an exercise which would currently be too expensive and take too long to use as a widespread method of screening. The adolescents were then given a computer test to gauge how they process emotional information. The test had the participants evaluate whether words were positive, negative or neutral (examples included 'joyful' for positive, 'failure' for negative, and 'range' for neutral).
Those adolescents with a variation of one gene (the short form of the serotonin transporter) as well as exposure to intermittent family arguments for longer than six months and violence between parents before the age of six were shown to have marked difficulty in evaluating the emotion within the words, indicating an inability to process emotional information. Previous research associated a maladjusted perception and response to emotions, as seen here, with a significantly increased risk of depression and anxiety.
Professor Ian Goodyer, Principal Investigator on the study from the University of Cambridge, said: "Whether we succumb to anxiety and depression depends in part on our tendencies to think well or poorly of ourselves at troubled times. How it comes about that some people see the 'glass half full' and think positively whereas other see the 'glass half empty' and think negatively about themselves at times of stress is not known.
"The evidence is that both our genes and our early childhood experiences contribute to such personal thinking styles. Before there are any clinical symptoms of depression or anxiety, this test reveals a deficient ability to efficiently and effectively perceive emotion processes in some teenagers -- a biomarker for low resilience which may lead to mental illnesses."
The scientists hope that their research could lead to developing inexpensive cognitive tests to screen for these illnesses, particularly in people identified as being at high social and genetic risk.
Dr Matthew Owens from the University of Cambridge added: "Having difficulty in processing emotions is likely to contribute to misunderstanding other people's intentions and can make individuals emotionally vulnerable. This research opens up the possibility of identifying individuals at greatest risk and helping them with techniques to process emotions more easily or training them to respond more adaptively to negative feedback."
Professor Goodyer further stated: "These types of cognitive biomarker can also be used to aid therapeutics by helping to determine which treatments are likely to work best for types of depressions and anxiety disorders. This is important, as although we have good treatments we do not yet know what works best for whom."
Professor Barbara Sahakian, a co-author on the paper from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge said: "The way we perceive and respond to emotions affects our resilience and whether we succumb to depression and other maladaptive ways of thinking. Using the biomarker identified in this study, it is possible to develop a screening programme to identify those at greatest risk."
Mental health problems are common in young people with approximately 10% of children (aged 5-16 years old) in Great Britain being assessed as having a mental disorder of some kind including conduct disorder, emotional disorder or hyperactivity. In addition, adolescence is a critical period for the development of depressions.
Under new coach, goalkeeping trio ready to build on season's improvement
Although the women?s soccer team?s record this season (6-9-1, 2-4-1 Ivy) was less than attention-grabbing, one statistic was not.
After losing last season?s starting goalkeeper, Lillian Klein, to graduation, the Lions were forced to rely on a group of talented but inexperienced goalkeepers for this year. The goalkeeping unit, composed entirely of underclassmen, not only filled the void left by Klein?s departure, but also improved on the team?s 2011 performance, increasing its save percentage from 0.787 to 0.827.
This improvement coincided with the arrival of goalkeeper coach Nathan Kipp, a former Duke goalkeeper coach and a coach in the Women?s Professional Soccer League. Kipp met women?s soccer head coach Kevin McCarthy when he was just starting his coaching career at Iona College back in 2003. Kipp went on to work for a number of collegiate programs before advancing into the professional coaching game, where he most recently worked with New Jersey team Sky Blue FC.
But when the WPSL suspended play earlier this year, Kipp was eager to get back into the college game. Since he was living close to New York City, he reached out to McCarthy to inquire about joining the staff as a goalkeeper coach.
?I approached him saying, look, I want to get back in the college game and I?m anxious to do some coaching with some younger players who are not quite as far along in their development cycle,? Kipp said.
The academic rigor at Columbia is what attracted Kipp to the Lions? soccer program. Ivy League athletes bring their academic prowess to the game of soccer, Kipp said?they are students of the game.
?I always enjoyed coaching soccer players who are also intellects,? Kipp said.
Kipp brought his own coaching philosophy with him to Columbia. He believes that goalkeepers must be taught individually because they each have a different approach to playing the game. The relationship between a goalkeeper coach and his players could be equated to that of a baseball pitching coach and his pitchers?Kipp has to find ways to maximize the unique personal abilities of each individual goalkeeper.
The three goalkeepers, Jourdan Sayers, Grace Redmon, and Gabby Dubick, said that Kipp has been successful, especially by introducing new techniques such as filming their practices.
Kipp?s players all spoke highly of his training techniques and the individual attention he provides.
Despite breaking her foot in the preseason, sophomore Jourdan Sayers cited Kipp?s individual help and attention as major factors in quickening her return to the game.
?When I did come back, I had a lot of difficulty diving to the side that I broke, and so there were a few times that he stayed late at practice with me just to break that down, and to really focus at regaining the basic technique,? Sayers said.
This year?s women?s soccer team offered Kipp the unique opportunity to coach young, developing keepers eager to improve their respective games. The lack of an established upperclassman keeper has lead to a healthy competitiveness within the goalkeeping unit, and the goalkeepers being so close in age adds to the competitiveness. They also said they spur each other on.
?I don?t think it would matter if they were seniors or juniors or we were all freshmen. We would all come in everyday with an attitude that wants to train, wants to work hard, wants to win and do what?s best for the team,? freshman goalkeeper Gabby Dubick said.
Although sophomore Grace Redmon started the most games in the net this season, all three keepers have good shots at the starting job for next season.
?Every season is an open book, and even though we had a situation this year with one goalkeeper playing the majority of minutes, we?re not locked into that. We?re not locked into Grace.
She will have to earn that starting spot next year,? Kipp said.
Next season?s starter may be up in the air, but one thing is for sure: If this season was any indication, things will only continue to improve for coach Kipp and the trio of young goalkeepers.
There is a lot of work to be done in the offseason, but 2013 looks promising.
GOP senators more troubled after Rice meeting
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Three Republican senators said Tuesday they are more troubled than ever with comments made days after the deadly Sept. 11 raid in Libya by Susan Rice, the U.N. ambassador and President Barack Obama's possible choice for secretary of state.
Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte met privately with Rice and acting CIA Director Michael Morell for more than an hour on her much-maligned explanations of the attack on the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.
Rice told the lawmakers that the initial assessment of the cause of the attack five days later was wrong.
"The talking points provided by the intelligence community, and the initial assessment upon which they were based, were incorrect in a key respect: There was no protest or demonstration in Benghazi," Rice said in a statement after the meeting. "While we certainly wish that we had had perfect information just days after the terrorist attack, as is often the case the intelligence assessment has evolved."
She insisted that there was no intention to mislead the American people, and the administration updated Congress as the assessment evolved. The senators, though, were not mollified.
"We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn't get concerning evidence that was leading up to the attack on the consulate and the tragic death of four brave Americans and whether Ambassador Rice was prepared, or informed sufficiently, to give the American people the correct depiction of the events that took place," McCain told reporters.
Said Graham: "Bottom line I'm more disturbed now than I was before that 16 September explanation."
The three insisted that they need more information about the Libyan raid before they even consider Rice as a possible replacement for Clinton.
"I'm more troubled today," said Ayotte, who argued that it was clear in the days after the attack that it was terrorism and not a spontaneous demonstration prompted by an anti-Muslim video.
At the White House, spokesman Jay Carney said there were "no unanswered questions about Rice's appearance on the Sunday shows and the talking points that she used that were provided by the intelligence community. Those questions have been answered."
Carney called the focus on Rice's appearance on the Sunday shows an "obsession."
Despite lingering questions over her public comments after the Benghazi attack, Rice has emerged as the front-runner on a short list of candidates to succeed Clinton, with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., seen as her closest alternative.
The strong statements from the three senators clouded Rice's prospects only two days after Republican opposition seem to be softening. Rice planned meetings on Wednesday with Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, who is in line to become the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.
Corker said Tuesday that he had concerns with a possible nomination.
"When I hear Susan talk she seems to me like she'd be a great chairman of the Democratic National Committee," Corker said. "There is nobody who is more staff supportive of what the administration does. That concerns me in a secretary of state."
Rice's series of meetings on Capitol Hill will be a critical test both for Republicans, who will decide whether they can support her, and the administration, which must gauge whether Rice has enough support to merit a nomination.
A senior Senate aide said the administration was sounding out moderate members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, such as Corker and Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. Assessing the prospects for Rice before Obama makes any announcement would avoid the embarrassment of a protracted fight with the Senate early in the president's second term and the possible failure of the nominee.
On talk shows the weekend following the attack, which took place on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, Rice was given talking points that described the attack as a spontaneous protest of the film, even though the Obama administration had known for days that it was a militant assault.
Republicans called her nomination doomed, leading to a vigorous defense of her by Obama in his first postelection news conference. Since then, GOP lawmakers have appeared to soften their views. McCain, who said earlier this month that would he do everything in his power to scuttle a Rice nomination, said Sunday that he was willing to hear Rice out before making a decision.
Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, had issued a statement highly critical of Rice on the day of Obama's news conference. He indicated Monday that perhaps she didn't know what had transpired in Benghazi on the day of the attack.
"I assumed she had full knowledge of everything that went on. I'm not at all convinced of that now. She very well could have been thrown under the bus," Inhofe said in an interview. He said she hadn't requested a meeting but he would be glad to meet with her.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday that the administration appreciated McCain's latest comments about Rice, but wouldn't say whether the president saw them as an opening to make the nomination. "Ambassador Rice has done an excellent job at the United Nations and is highly qualified for any number of positions," Carney said.
Several diplomats currently serving with Rice said that what she lacked in Clinton's star power, she could make up with a blunter approach that demands attention and has marked her tenure thus far at the United Nations.
Rice, who at 48 is relatively young, has been known to covet the job for years, but was passed over for Clinton in 2009.
New electricity tariff killing small businesses ? NASME
By PROVIDENCE OBUH
The new electricity tariff, known as, Multi-Year-Tariff Order (MYTO) II is killing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector, says National Association? of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME).
This was one of the findings of a survey initiated by the Association to assess the impact of the new electricity tariff on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country. ?SMEs in the manufacturing sector have been the hardest hit by the MYTO II tariff.
They have experienced increases ranging from 70 per cent to 440 per cent in their monthly electricity tariff. On average, manufacturing SMEs across the country have experienced an increase of 188.6 per cent in electricity tariff since the introduction of MYTO II?, the Association said.
The findings of the survey were presented by Executive Secretary, NASME, Mr Eke Ubiji during a one-day Policy Dialogue with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on the effect of the MYTO II policy on MSMEs in Nigeria.
He said the survey was initiated by NAMSE following several complaints received from members about the high cost implication of the new tariff.
He said the survey, which was conducted by NOI, took place from November 6th to 12th 2012 in the six geo-political zones in the country with field work conducted in Cross-River, Bauchi, Imo, Kaduna, Lagos states and Abuja.
A total of 138 businesses were interviewed and 127 interviews were completed, 45 per cent of the completed interviews were NASME members, while 55 per cent were non- NASME members but SMEs as well as being members of other business membership organisations (BMOs) such as Nigerian Association of Small Scale Industrialists (NASSI), Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and State Chambers of Commerce and Industries.
Ubiji noted that the importance of MSMEs cannot be over emphasized, saying that findings from the survey shows that BMO members have a very negative perception about the MYTO II tariff and its introduction.
?Also more businesses have increased their average spend on electricity from between 10 per cent to 20 per cent of total operating costs before June 2012 and from 20 per cent to 30 per cent of total operating costs after June 2012. There has also been an increase from 11 per cent to 18 per cent on the average spend on electricity as a percentage of their operating cost since June 2012.
GOP senator offers 'fiscal cliff' solution
WASHINGTON (AP) ? A freshman GOP senator is jumping into the debate on how to avoid a "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and automatic spending cuts, advocating a mix of tax increases with curbs on Social Security and Medicare benefits.
Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker is circulating a 10-year, $4.5 trillion plan loaded with controversial proposals, including a less generous inflation adjustment for Social Security, and a gradual increase in the regular Social Security retirement age to 68 and the Medicare eligibility age to 67.
Corker's plan also includes $749 billion in higher tax revenue claimed by capping itemized deductions at $50,000, a proposal that hits wealthier taxpayers the hardest.
Corker has yet to attract any Democrats in support. But he's a rarity on Capitol Hill in that he's offering specific spending cuts and tax increases instead of vaguely-worded bromides about how to tackle the country's deficit woes.
Corker offered a broad outline of the 242-page measure on the editorial page of Monday's Washington Post. A more detailed summary circulating on Capitol Hill contains a fuller description, including higher Medicare premiums for upper-income earners and new revenue from Medicare co-payments and deductibles.
Federal workers would get hit with higher contributions to their pensions and would receive an $11,000 voucher payment to finance their family's health insurance, saving taxpayers about $7 billion a year.
The fiscal cliff is a one-two punch of automatic cuts to the Pentagon and domestic programs ? the punishment for the failure last year of a deficit supercommittee to craft a budget deal. Economists warn it could send the United States back into a recession, and high-level talks between the White House and top Republicans like House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, continue in hopes of meeting a year-end deadline to avoid the cliff.
Corker's plan is a longshot. For starters, he rejects the idea of settling for a "down payment" on the deficit that would be used to punt the big decisions on the budget to next year, even though that's the recommendation of Boehner. And his plan is tilted to painful choices on Social Security and Medicare that Democrats are unlikely to embrace.
"Kicking the can down the road ? setting up a process for token deficit reduction today with the promise of more reforms later ? is misguided and irresponsible and shows a total lack of courage," Corker says.
The White House insists that instead of limiting deductions, any budget solution must include higher tax rates on upper-income earners.
"Math tells us that you can't get the kind of balanced approach that you need without having rates be part of the equation," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday. "We haven't seen a proposal that achieves that, a realistic proposal that achieves that."
my house: Death and dying: End of Life Exit strategies
Quite simply, this is about a making a conscious, rational decision that if diagnosed with a terminal disease or for any other reason deciding that quality of life is unacceptable, having control over the end of the life process, ensuring that the end of life happens in a quick, painless manner, rather than suffering a lingering death as the victim of a society that is dominated by relgious beliefs that prevent humans receving the same level of terminal care as a family pet.
Disclaimer: I hope to live a long and satisfying life and have no suicidal ambitions at present. Unfortunately it is the stigma of discussing end of life? that forces me to make this disclaimer as otherwise many of my friends would believe falsely that I am contemplating suicide.
I have no fear of death. Death is nothingness as the brain ceases to function. From a personal perspective, death is no different from a general anaesthetic except that you don't wake up. I remember thinking about this the last time I underwent a GA. As I was wheeled into to the prep room and the the anaesthetic was connected to the veins in my wrist, I was thinking that what I was about to experience would be identical to the moment of death in a controlled environment. That was the last thought I had before I woke up....
However, I do have a natural and understandable fear of dying. Dying is about pain and even more about loss of control as you become weaker and lose control of your own destiny. My greatest fear would be coming semi-vegatitive -suffering but unable to articulate my desire for the pain and humiliation to end.
I feel great comfort in knowing that if I am every confronted with a terminal illness that I will be able to be in control of my own destiny to the end. I am a huge support of Exit International - http://www.exitinternational.net/ a voluntary euthanasia organisation started by an Australian Doctor who actually created a patient controlled euthanasia machine more than a decade ago, but was banned from using it by the Australian Courts.
At the moment, I have two preferred strategies for end of life management. The first is self-management through use of a Helium bag (or a Helium tent for terminally ill couples). The great thing about Helium is that it doesn't produce any subjective signs of approaching hypoxia such as shortness of breath. There is no discomfort at all and unconciousness? and then death happens gradually and painlessly, within minutes as the helium replaces oxygen. However, it is important to obtain the right equipment as unfornately there are many examples of this not working when a heliumu/oxygen mix is unintentionally used instead of pure Helium. See: http://suicideproject.org/2011/08/failed-helium-exit-bag-attempt
This is wonderful blog with people trying to help each other achieve a painless death without any questioning of their intentions.
My second recommended strategy is Dignitas, the Swiss assisted suicide organisaton. http://www.dignitas.ch/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=20&lang=en
Dignitas provide a dying with dignity service for those with confirmed terminal illnesses. However, for most of my friends, using Dignitas would mean ending your life a long way from your family and friends, unless you could convince them to accompany you to Switzerland. I've read many wonderful stories from people arriving at Dignitas who have used their savings to pay for family and friends to accompany them to Switzlerland and have have had a wonderful final night out at a nice restaurant before ending their lives.
My strong support for a structued and and humanist end of life strategy is driven by three things. The first is my humanist worldview. Without the fantasy of religion, we can make sensible moral and ethical decisions that are in the best interests of ourselves. Secondly, I have a clear memory of the suicide of my sister, who didn't have the knowledge or support to have a painless end of life. She took rat poison and did not die painlessly. The police who recovered her body initially thought that she was murdered due to the amount of bruises on her body. The brusies were in fact caused by the reaction of the rat poison on her body.
Thirdly, I have fond recollections of my Father, who was a very caring, humanist, atheist Doctor. He had similar principles to myself in respect of end of life care for his patients. I remember one Saturday that I was was with him as he did his hospital round. He had to visit "Mr Smith", who who was an extreme diabetic with a terminal illness. All Mr Smith had wanted was was an ice-cream and was not allowed was not allowed this due to his illness. My dad bought Mr Smith an ice cream and Mr Smith passed away peacefully soon after.
I hope to die a natural death, but it is very comforting to know that if I am am ever diagnosed with a terminal illness that I will be in control of my destiny.
Bedard: Is Packers-Giants the new Patriots-Colts?
Green Bay looking for a little revenge Sunday night after last year's playoff loss
By Greg Bedard
NBCSports.com contributor
updated 6:23 p.m. ET Nov. 24, 2012
|
A week after the Ravens and Steelers battled each other in the AFC North, one of the burgeoning NFC rivalries, Giants-Packers, will have another installment at MetLife Stadium.
With two young, elite quarterbacks in Aaron Rodgers and Eli Manning leading each team, Giants-Packers is looking a lot like the successor to Colts-Patriots, Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning: two teams in different divisions who find a way to see each other often between the regular and postseason (sixth meeting since 2007 with Packers holding 3-2 edge).
Both Giants' wins against the Packers have come in January (2007 and ?11), in the postseason, as the Giants marched into Lambeau Field, left with a physical victory and went on to win the Super Bowl.
Last year?s 37-20 loss to the Giants ended a dream season for the Packers, who were 15-1 at the time. They lost because their execution was terrible ? giving up a Hail Mary touchdown, dropping four passes, turning the ball over four times and a plethora of missed tackles.
It?s safe to say the Packers (7-3) haven?t forgotten their performance, and the beating the Giants (6-4) put on them. Not that Green Bay will acknowledge that. It is focused on this game, not the past.
?Watching the playoff game, it wasn?t fun, I think that?s obvious,? coach Mike McCarthy said this week. ?But it?s part of our preparation for the week. A lot of the same players played in that game, played in the regular-season game (in 2011). We all understand how the season ended, but we?re focused on 8-3.?A look at the keys for each team:
Packers
Rodgers can?t hold the ball: Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is an exceptional player with smarts, a terrific arm and very quick feet that allow him to keep plays alive or make them on his own. But sometimes Rodgers tries to do too much, tries to keep the play alive too long and that can lead to protection issues. Rodgers has been sacked 32 times this season, which is more than any other NFL quarterback. Some of those are on Rodgers for holding onto the ball too long. While the Giants rank just 13th with 25 sacks, they are capable of dominating a game with ends Jason Pierre-Paul, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck. McCarthy needs to put in a quick-pass game plan, and Rodgers needs to stick to it outside of called shot plays.
Stop the run: The Giants have gotten a bit out of whack lately with their pass-run balance, but they?ll look to establish the run more against the Packers. The Giants need the run to make their passing game, which has struggled of late, really click. The Packers (11th in the league) have done a nice job against the run now that their personnel have settled down. The defensive line of Ryan Pickett, Jerel Worthy and B.J. Raji are very sturdy and have allowed inside linebackers A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones to fill nicely. The Packers want the Giants to stay pass heavy because they?re in a slump and could get some three-and-outs that could get the Packers going.
Do your job: When the Packers have struggled the past few years, it hasn?t been because of what the opponent has done, it?s because the Packers have killed themselves with poor execution. If the Packers execute their blocks, catch the ball and tackle well, they?re a tough matchup for anyone. But they haven?t done that consistently. This also includes kicker Mason Crosby, who has been in a terrible slump. He has to make his kicks early because if he?s an issue, it could change the way the Packers play in Giants' territory for the rest of the game.
Giants
Protect up front: Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers will probably look to bring pressure against the Giants because his front seven has a tough time winning with standout outside linebacker Clay Matthews out. Capers also knows he can?t let Eli Manning have clean reads, and his line is ripe for the taking. The Giants have had a rough time of late protecting Manning ? they were destroyed by the Bengals. Expect the Packers to throw a ton of overload blitzes at the right side of the Giants? line, where guard Kevin Boothe and David Diehl have been the weak spots. The Giants chip a lot with the running backs out of the backfield, and they might have to think about keeping a tight end in to help with protection. The Packers will be coming.
Get after Rodgers: With excellent right tackle Bryan Bulaga out for the season, the Packers have had to do a line dance with left guard T.J. Lang moving to right tackle, and backup Evan Dietrich-Smith in at left guard. Both compete really hard but are limited in their ability at those spots. Left tackle Marshall Newhouse has had problems on occasion this season, and center Jeff Saturday is not the player he once was. The Giants? defensive line should be able to dominate this game up front against the run and the pass. And that should give the Giants a really good chance of winning the game.
Get physical with the Packers? receivers: The Packers have talented targets for Rodgers in Greg Jennings (questionable after abdominal surgery), Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Randall Cobb and tight end Jermichael Finley. But the book on them is that they don?t like contact and can be thrown off their game if defensive backs are physical with them. It also throws off the timing of the passing offense and causes Rodgers to hold the ball longer. The Giants should try to be physical with the Packers? receivers, but they should be careful with Cobb. The speedy slot receiver is lining up in different spots every week, including running back. He could be a big problem if the Giants don?t get their hands on him. That means everyone ? ends, outside linebackers and defensive backs ? needs to make sure they hit Cobb on his releases. If he runs free, he might go all the way to the end zone.
Home decor is not only an art; but is also a technique to get the interiors of a dwelling right, by making it aesthetically pleasing. Along with the selection of the decorative items, placement is also important to enhance the visual effect of a room. There are plenty of home decor accessories available in the market; but you have to be judicious with your pick, keeping the entire setup of your house in mind.
The traditional houses are more in sync with wooden antique items to liven up the room, whereas modern home decor accessories are more abstract, fun and sleek. Here are some of the most impressive modern home decor accessories to add a unique personality to your house.
Modern Home Accessories for Home Decor
Decorative Wall Mirrors
Beautiful and trendy, decorative wall mirrors are extremely popular as home decor accessory for contemporary urban homes. Not only because these mirrors are gorgeous to look at; but also help to deal with the limited space problems in modern dwellings. Large decorative mirrors adorning a wall accentuates the decor a few notches above, while reflecting the natural sun light to make the room look more sunny and spacious. Hung or fixed on the wall, the decorative mirrors also keep the floor free from clutter and look sleek.
Trendy Wall Decals
Ideal home decor accessory for modern homes, wall stickers or decals are the trendier and more affordable take on wall papers. Available in a huge range of colour, design and sizes, wall decals can be re-positioned or removed after some time to give a fresh look to the room.
Wall decals can alleviate the interiors to a new level, without putting much of effort. Easy to put, wall decals are mostly available in DIY kits.
Lights
Lamp, wall sconce or decorative lights suspended through the ceilings are not only for practical purposes in modern homes, but also to add up to the glamour of the room. With more clean and futuristic designs, various lighting options for contemporary homes are way different from intricately carved and design chandeliers and end table lamps. These lighting options are sleek and stylish with chic designs.
Polymer chemistry: Dual-function molecules enhance widely used chemical reaction while reducing harmful by-products
ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? Production of biocompatible and super-absorbent materials may become easier, thanks to Anbanandam Parthiban and co-workers at the A*STAR Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences. Using a modification to the high-precision technique known as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), which links molecules into long chains, the researchers have developed new compounds that can directly polymerize acidic vinyl monomers, such as acrylic acid.
Acrylic acid polymers are water-absorbing materials widely used in diapers and as emulsifying agents for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
Previous attempts to use ATRP with polar vinyl monomers, including acrylic acid, were unsuccessful, a failure that some chemists attributed to catalyst 'poisoning' by carboxylic acids. Parthiban and his team's compounds resolve this problem by binding to the catalyst while simultaneously initiating the radical polymerization process. This process prevents poisoning and dramatically reduces metallic waste.
Despite ATRP's inability to directly produce acrylic acid polymers, it is used in laboratories worldwide: it allows researchers to assemble complex polymers in a step-by-step fashion that gives enormous control over product architectures. The key is using a catalyst that can readily switch between two oxidation states, such as a copper salt, explains Parthiban. The copper catalyst first interacts with an ATRP initiator molecule to activate organic free radicals and an oxidized metal complex. The free radicals then quickly polymerize target monomers, while the metal complex undergoes equilibrium with a dormant, lower oxidation state. With appropriate reaction conditions, chemists can then restart polymerization with new monomers.
Parthiban and co-workers addressed ATRP's limitation by developing 'unimolecular ligand-initiator systems' (ULIS), a series of branched molecules containing multiple binding sites for copper atoms, as well as halogens for activating free radical species. In this approach, the ULIS molecules become part of the polymer chain during the active-dormant cycles instead of remaining isolated. The researchers envisaged that this interconnection would suppress the acidic side-reactions that lead to catalyst poisoning.
Experiments by the researchers proved their theories correct: they could efficiently polymerize acrylic acid and other vinyl monomers using ULIS-promoted ATRP (see image). Surprisingly, they found that these reactions could be achieved using less than 100 parts-per-million concentrations of copper catalyst, a quantity comparable to residues left in conventional ATRP purified polymers.
Parthiban notes that although the ULIS ligands are part of the polymer chain and might be expected to produce high amounts of metal waste, the homogenous nature of intramolecular-based free radical polymerization allows less metal to be used -- an important consequence for sustainable chemistry efforts.
Gaza crowds surge at Israel border fence, 1 dead
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Israeli troops fired on Gazans surging toward Israel's border fence Friday, killing one person but leaving intact the fragile two-day-old cease-fire between Hamas and the Jewish state.
The truce, which calls for an end to Gaza rocket fire on Israel and Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, came after eight days of cross-border fighting, the bloodiest between Israel and Hamas in four years.
Hundreds of Palestinians approached the border fence Friday in several locations in southern Gaza, testing expectations Israel would no longer enforce a 300-meter-wide (300-yard-wide) no-go zone on the Palestinian side of the fence that was meant to prevent infiltrations into Israel. In the past, Israeli soldiers routinely opened fire on those who crossed into the zone.
In one incident captured by Associated Press video, several dozen Palestinians, most of them young men, approached the fence, coming close to a group of Israeli soldiers standing on the other side.
Some Palestinians briefly talked to the soldiers, while others appeared to be taunting them with chants of "God is Great" and "Morsi, Morsi," in praise of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, whose mediation led to the truce.
At one point, a soldier shouted in Hebrew, "Go there, before I shoot you," and pointed away from the fence, toward Gaza. The soldier then dropped to one knee, assuming a firing position. Eventually, a burst of automatic fire was heard, but it was not clear whether any of the casualties were from this incident.
Gaza health official Ashraf al-Kidra said a 20-year-old man was killed and 19 people were wounded by Israeli fire near the border.
During the incidents, Hamas security tried to defuse the situation and keep the crowds away from the fence.
Moussa Abu Marzouk, a top Hamas official at the ongoing negotiations in Cairo, told The Associated Press that the violence would have no effect on the ceasefire.
The crowds were mainly made up of young men but also included farmers hoping to once again farm lands in the buffer zone. Speaking by phone from the buffer zone, 19-year-old Ali Abu Taimah said he and his father were checking three acres of family land that have been fallow for several years.
"When we go to our land, we are telling the occupation (Israel) that we are not afraid at all," he said.
Israel's military said roughly 300 Palestinians approached the security fence at different points, tried to damage it and cross into Israel. Soldiers fired warning shots in the air, but after the Palestinians refused to move back, troops fired at their legs, the military said. A Palestinian infiltrated into Israel during the unrest, but was returned to Gaza, it said.
The truce allowed both Hamas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to step back from the brink of a full-fledged war. Over eight days, Israel's aircraft carried out some 1,500 strikes on Hamas-linked targets, while Gaza fighters fired roughly the same number of rockets at Israel.
The fighting killed 166 Palestinians, including scores of civilians, and six Israelis.
In Cairo, Egypt is hosting separate talks with Israeli and Hamas envoys on the next phase of the cease-fire ? a new border deal for blockaded Gaza. Hamas demands an end to border restrictions, while Israel insists Hamas halt weapons smuggling to Gaza.
A poll Friday showed about half of Israelis thinks their government should have continued its Gaza offensive.
The independent Maagar Mohot poll showed 49 percent of respondents felt Israel should have kept pursuing squads that fire rockets into Israel, 31 percent supported the decision to stop and 20 percent had no opinion. Twenty-nine percent thought Israel should have sent ground troops into Gaza. The poll of 503 respondents had an error margin of 4.5 percentage points.
The same survey showed Netanyahu's Likud Party and electoral partner Israel Beiteinu losing some support, but his hard-line bloc was still favored to form the next government after Jan. 22 elections.
