Prostate cancer: Know the facts

By Sola Ogundipe

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men worldwide and ranked second as the cause of death in cancer-related diseases.? About 20,000 men die of prostate cancer every year in Nigeria. On daily basis, at least 14 men die in the country.

Men with prostate cancer do not always experience symptoms

Most of the time, men don?t have symptoms. Some men, however, do experience changes in urinary or sexual function, including frequent nighttime urination, painful or burning urination, difficulty getting or maintain an erection or a dull pain in the lower pelvic area.

There?s no one-size-fits-all screening recommendation

Men of average risk are often advised to consider screening earlier at age 40 to establish a baseline. Every man needs to? learn what makes the most sense for their personal health risks and lifestyle.

Screening is to detect prostate cancer at its earliest stages, before any symptoms have developed. That?s when the cancer can be treated most effectively. Screening may include a Prostate-Specific Antigen, PSA, blood test, with or without a Digital Rectal Examination, DRE.

Dietary supplements do not prevent prostate cancer There?s no good scientific data to support the use of supplements. Men are far better off leading a healthy lifestyle, managing weight, exercising and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Elevated PSA levels do not always mean cancer

Only about 30 percent of the time does an elevated PSA indicate cancer. Other conditions that can raise PSA include an enlarged prostate due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (which can affect? ability to pass urine), prostatitis (an infection or inflammation of the prostate gland), or even injury or recent ejaculation (which can raise PSA)

African American men are at higher risk than others

Though scientists aren?t sure why, African American men are more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer at a later stage and are more than twice as likely as Caucasian men to die.

A vasectomy does not increase risk for prostate cancer

There?s no evidence of a link with vasectomy and prostate cancer.

Most prostate cancers are diagnosed in older men

Prostate cancer is rarely found in men younger than age 40. In fact, more than 65 percent of prostate cancer is diagnosed in men older than? 65.

That?s why it?s important for men to pay attention to any changes in their sexual or urinary health.

Early treatment prevents death

If caught early, prostate cancer has? 95 percent survival rate.

Purpose of screening is to detect prostate cancer at its earliest stages, before any symptoms have developed.

That?s when the cancer can be treated most effectively. There are two easy tests that can be done at the doctor?s office: the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test and the digital rectal examination, DRE.

For most American homeowners, hot weather can be an invitation to just take the party out to the backyard patio or deck. When you take out the grill and light the tiki torches, however, take the time to accomplish just a little preventive maintenance.

?This could be the time and energy to perform a few basic items that will make your deck work for years,? says home repair expert, Jim Rocchetta. ?Plus, you?ll have your outdoor environment looking good before you and your friends head outside for anyone backyard get-togethers.?

The initial step is just a thorough examination of the entire structure to ensure it?s safe and secure. Search for free nails and screws, and either change them or retighten them. Tighten any rails which have become loose. Then, look underneath the deck to ensure that supports and support poles stay static in good working order. ?If you will find structural components that are loose, rotten or out of position, for your own personel protection, quit using the deck and call an expert into resolve the problem,? says Rocchetta.

As an additional safety precaution, replace broken or rotten deck boards before they break through completely. Boards that have become bowed or deformed may also must be changed because they carry water and make the deck surface irregular, and produce another potential safety hazard. Improve living of your deck by utilizing stainless steel or high-grade galvanized nails designed to overcome the corrosive aftereffects of modern lumber treatment chemicals, If you?re replacing these boards with pressure-treated lumber.

Once every thing is safe, clean the deck boards with a biodegradable deck cleaner to eliminate dust, mildew and algae. These green solvents are now commonly available and actually perform much better than formerly common outside wood products such as for instance bleach. Even though your deck is manufactured out of a composite material, many companies still recommend a comprehensive annual cleaning. During the cleaning process, also take a little time to sand down any spots that have become difficult or splintered.

Finally, make sure your deck looks good by protecting it from water and form damage with a high-quality finish and chemical. There are numerous good items on the market. ?The most readily useful chemical services and products contain UV-resistant substances that may really liven up the deck surface and put in a high-degree of protection from the elements,? says Rocchetta.

GameStick: The World's Smallest Gaming Console Fits in Its Own ...

January 2nd, 2013 by: Technabob

Gamers, get ready for the next big thing on Kickstarter. What you?re looking at here is an entire gaming console that fits inside of a 2-inch-long stick, and neatly travels inside of its controller.

gamestick

Developed by PlayJam, the GameStick is an incredible engineering marvel that crams an entire Android 4 gaming system into a portable stick you can take with you anywhere. All you do is plug it into the HDMI port on any HDTV, and you?ll be gaming in seconds. I love the idea of this, because you can throw the entire console in your bag and take it with you wherever you go. Keep in mind that your set needs to be MHL-compliant to self-power via the HDMI port, otherwise, you?ll need to plug the GameStick into a USB power source.

Since the system is based on Android, it will be easy for developers to get their games up and running on the console. In fact, the team behind the GameStick has already identified about 200 titles that will work great out-of-the-box, and is working with over 250 developers and game studios to create content for the console. Games will be delivered wirelessly, and will sell for much less than traditional console titles. They?re also expecting a library of free games to hit the console as well.

The system is powered by an Amlogic 8726-MX processor, with 1GB of DDR3 RAM and 8GB of flash memory for storage. It supports 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, and uses Bluetooth LE 4.0 to communicate with the controller. Here?s some early demo footage of a prototype device to give you a sense of how powerful it actually is:

The GameStick project just launched over on Kickstarter with a goal of $100,000 to go into production. I think they?ll have no problem reaching ? and likely blowing well through this goal in the next 29 days. If you move quickly, a pledge of $69(USD) will get you one of the first 250 GameStick/Controller bundles, and after those sell out, the price goes up to $79 for supporters. For $115 or more, you get the bundle with an additional controller. Based on the current production timeline, the first GameSticks should ship in April 2013, so you won?t even have to wait that long to get your hands on one.

It was unclear whether the soldiers were trying to enter Jordan or were attempting to return to Syria.

The security spokesman could not provide further details as the probe is underway.

FL Auto Insurance? - The Hull Truth - Boating and Fishing Forum

Quote:

Currently we are paying $1800/yr ($900/6mo) for car insurance, for basic coverage on 98 Acura CL and 2000 F250 diesel supercab. Clean driving records, married, both of us in the 40s. Vehicles have alot of miles, and are not worth much in case of a loss/theft, are there any options to get cheaper car insurance? Maybe No-Fault is cheaper? I am looking to get into $1000/year range if at all possible, my current Progressive rate seems way too high

Help!

It's tough to get a decent rate down here in Florida. I'm in the business and I know it all too well. I'm mid twenties and had an Infiniti G35x paid $500 6/mth for it when I lived up North. Moved down here and it jumped to $1450/6mth Clean driving record, no tickets, ect. You get killed because everyone is injured and the tow company wants to charge us $900 to keep a car for a weekend and tow it 6 miles. I was part of a discussion last week where a lady submitted $17k worth of medical bills including a hernia operation due to an accident at a publix where both parties backed into each other at about 3MPH.

That being said it's going to be tough. Seek out some online quotes with Geico, Allstate, Nationwide, and 21st Century. You may have luck going through an agent that services multiple carriers. USAA is an excellent carrier but you or a parent would have to be active or retired armed forces.

Word of advice do not skimp on coverage to save your rate. Min property limits down here are $10k and you can do that in a fender bender with any high end car down here. Same thing with bodily injury...see above example.

If you have any questions give me a shout I'd be happy to point you in any direction or answer any question you might have.

Tonight We Saw Why It's Basically Impossible To ... - Business Insider

The sub-sub-plot of the day was the story that the GOP had proposed attaching a Chained CPI requirement to a fiscal cliff deal. Basically, this means that the annual cost-of-living adjustment in Social Security would be lower than it is now.

Liberals hate the idea because it's a benefit cut.

And now as the GOP isn't pushing it anymore either (for now). John McCain went so far as to call it a "losing hand."

Marco Rubio went so far as to say that while the GOP is not pushing for these cuts, Obama is.

The thing is, if there's ever going to be a politically palatable cut to Social Security, this is probably it, since it's pretty technical, and nobody will get what it is, and it doesn't sound like a cut.

As Phil Klein points out, if the GOP can't even get behind this tweak, there's very little hope for anything substantive in the big picture.

There are two big stories with entitlement cuts.

One is that politicians are open to them in theory, but then don't want their fingerprints on the weapon when it's time to do the deed.

The other is that it's usually Republicans that end up killing entitlement tweaks. Every time DC gets close to a "grand bargain" (something which Obama would clearly be willing to sign off on), Boehner or his caucus kills it.

And that makes sense. If you're the party of fighting deficits, then you have a lot of lose politically by taking deficit reduction off the table in the form of actual progress.
