Egypt condemns Israeli plan to expand settlements (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egypt on Wednesday condemned an Israeli decision to construct 1,100 Jewish settlers homes in East Jerusalem and called the move "provocative."

Egypt, which has a peace treaty with Israel, has always condemned Israeli settlements but relations have grown more tense since the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak, a strategic ally of Israel and its main backer the United States.

Ties were further strained after Egyptian border guards were killed when Israeli troops pursued what is said were cross-border raiders in August.

Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr said of the new settlement activity, "This step reflects an Israeli choice to continue in its provocative policies and to challenge everyone in the international community that sees settlement construction as illegitimate."

Amr said in a statement that the move was complicating efforts to "regain credibility for a political compromise."

Britain and the European Union also called on Israel to reverse the decision. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said new settlement building would be "counter-productive" to the efforts to revive peace talks.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who has applied for U.N. Security Council recognition of Palestine as a state, a move the U.S. says it will boycott, says he will not accept U.S. and Israeli calls for negotiations unless Israel stops building new settlements on occupied land.

CLEAR DEMAND

The Quartet of international mediators -- the United States, the European Union, Russia, and the United Nations -- called for talks to begin within a month and urged both sides not to take unilateral actions that could block peacemaking.

But Amr criticized the Quartet for not making a clear demand for Israel to end settlement expansion, saying the statement gave the Jewish state the space to approve the expansion.

"Egypt is concerned about the pace of settlement construction ... particularly in the past two months, where more than 6,000 new settlements were approved," Amr said, describing the approvals as "irresponsible."

"The Israelis are completely responsible for what could be caused by these provocative policies in the midst of exceptional circumstances the region is going through," he said.

After the border guards were killed in August, Egypt threatened to withdraw its ambassador from Tel Aviv but did not do so.

Many Egyptians were angry with Cairo's failure to take decisive action, and protesters marched on the Israeli embassy in the Egyptian capital. Some stormed it and Israel was forced to fly its ambassador home.

Israel and Egypt fought four major wars in which tens of thousands lost their lives before the Camp David peace treaty was signed, a pact both states say they are committed to.

Hide-and-seek: Altered HIV can't evade immune system

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2011) ? Researchers at Johns Hopkins have modified HIV in a way that makes it no longer able to suppress the immune system. Their work, they say in a report published online September 19 in the journal Blood, could remove a major hurdle in HIV vaccine development and lead to new treatments.

"Something about the HIV virus turns down the immune response, rather than triggering it, making it a tough target for vaccine development," says David Graham, Ph.D., assistant professor of molecular and comparative pathobiology and medicine. "We now seem to have a way to sidestep this barrier," he adds.

Typically, when the body's immune system cells encounter a virus, they send out an alarm by releasing chemicals called interferons to alert the rest of the body to the presence of a viral infection. When the immune cells encounter HIV, however, they release too many interferons, become overwhelmed and shut down the subsequent virus-fighting response.

The researchers had learned from other studies that when human immune cells (white blood cells) are depleted of cholesterol, HIV can no longer infect them. It turns out the coat that surrounds and protects the HIV viral genome also is rich in cholesterol, leading the Johns Hopkins team to test whether viruses lacking cholesterol could still infect cells at all.

The researchers treated HIV with a chemical to remove cholesterol from the viral coat. Then they introduced either the cholesterol-diminished or normal HIV to human immune cells growing in culture dishes, and measured how the cells responded. The cells exposed to cholesterol-diminished HIV didn't release any initial-response interferons, whereas the cells exposed to normal HIV did.

"The altered HIV doesn't overwhelm the system and instead triggers the innate immune response to kick in, like it does with any first virus encounter," says Graham.

Next, the researchers checked to see if cholesterol-diminished HIV activates so-called adaptive immune responses -- the responses that help the body remember specific pathogens long-term so the body develops immunity and counters future infections. To do this, they put normal HIV or cholesterol-diminished HIV into blood samples, which contain all the different cells needed for an adaptive immune response.

More specifically, they tested blood samples from people with previous exposure to HIV in order to see if their blood could mount an adaptive immune response. Blood samples were used from 10 HIV positive people and from 10 people repeatedly exposed to HIV who weren't infected. The researchers didn't expect the HIV-positive blood to respond to either version of HIV because of the severely damaged immune systems of HIV patients. However, when cholesterol-diminished HIV was introduced to the non-infected HIV blood in a tube, the cells of the adaptive immune response reacted against the virus. By altering the virus, explains Graham, the researchers were able to reawaken the immune system's response against HIV and negate HIV's immunosuppressive properties.

"In addition to vaccine applications, this study opens the door to developing drugs that attack the HIV viral coat as an adjunct therapy to promote immune system detection of the virus," says Graham.

This research was supported by funds from the Wellcome Trust and the National Institutes of Health.

Contributors to the research include David Graham and Veronica Aquino of The Johns Hopkins University; Adriano Boasso, Caroline Royle and Spyridon Doumazos of Imperial College; Mara Biasin, Luca Piacentini, Barbara Tavano and Mario Clerici of Universit? degli Studi di Milano; Dietmar Fuchs of Innsbruck Medical University; Francesco Mazzotta and Sergio Lo Caputo of Ospedale S. it does make plenty of sense to buy used coffee machines. In fact

Do you need to buy coffee machines regularly? Whether it is for a restaurant, caf? or the office, it does make plenty of sense to buy used coffee machines. In fact, that would be a short cut to maximizing savings. As long as they are free of defects and require only minor cosmetic repairs used coffee machines will dispense the same quantum and quality of coffee that is needed daily. Just try them out yourself before signing on the dotted line. If that is not practicable for logistic reasons, ask plenty of questions.

Check out on certain basics like warranty coverage ? whether it is still valid or has expired and what it entails ? and of course how old the machine is. Find out whether the previous owner of the used coffee machine has simply decided to switch to a more state-of-the-art model or was facing some challenges while operating the coffee machine. In particular private owners of used coffee machines often do change their coffee machines whenever a new model with more advanced features or options comes on the market. So with a little luck you might end up getting a mildly used coffee machine for a fraction of the price.

The used coffee machines which can brew a number of varieties of coffee can often be found on auction sites where their previous owners prefer to list them. There really is no need to be snooty about the coffee machines you invest in. If it is possible to save money, why not do so? You can also search in local shops for gently used coffee machines.

The web is another option for initiating your search. The catch is that you should not deal with a supplier who is physically very far away since coffee machines can get damaged during transportation. In fact, some manufacturers of coffee machines actually do offer an option to buyers to trade in their used coffee machines when they buy a new one. So you might actually be able to source the used coffee machines from the manufacturers and may be even get them to underwrite some kind of warranty.

Popular colorectal cancer drug may cause permanent nerve ...

Oxaliplatin, a platinum-based anticancer drug that's made enormous headway in recent years against colorectal cancer, appears to cause nerve damage that may be permanent and worsens even months after treatment ends. The chemotherapy side effect, described by Johns Hopkins researchers in the September issue of Neurology, was discovered in what is believed to be the first effort to track oxaliplatin-based nerve damage through relatively cheap and easy punch skin biopsies.

The Johns Hopkins investigators emphasize that the drug therapy clearly improves length of survival in advanced cancer by months to years, and that the goal of their new study is to find ways of preventing or slowing the damage through nerve-protective therapies identfied through simple skin testing.

Many patients who take oxaliplatin report bothersome neurological side effects, including pain in the hands and feet and a numbness or tingling in the throat that affects swallowing, according to study leader Michael Polydefkis, M.D., M.H.S., associate professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and director of the EMG Laboratory and Cutaneous Nerve Laboratory at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Though these symptoms develop over time in the majority of patients, some report neuropathies as early as when the drug is first infused.

To get a better sense of how oxaliplatin affects nerve cells, Polydefkis and his colleagues recruited eight cancer patients about to begin oxaliplatin treatment at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. All had been diagnosed with advanced colon cancer.

Before their first oxaliplatin infusion, each patient underwent a comprehensive neurological examination, including nerve conduction testing, a clinical exam to look for signs of nerve damage, and a punch biopsy that removed tiny (3-mm diameter) portions of skin near their knees and ankles. Once oxaliplatin treatment began, consisting of infusions over two days once every two weeks for 12 cycles, the researchers performed the same tests after 30, 90 and 180 days. Another 180 days after they finished with treatment, the patients received one final exam.

Test results showed that each of the patients' nerve function and neuropathy symptoms worsened over time and that results from the punch skin biopsies neatly mirrored the side effect arc. Using a microscope, the researchers saw that nerve cells' long extensions, called axons, degenerated over the course of oxaliplatin therapy. This progression persisted after treatment stopped. Even 180 days after their last doses, seven out of the eight patients' axons continued to wither.

"This drug has rapidly become the standard of care for people with advanced colon cancer, but we really knew little about how oxaliplatin affects nerves over time," he says. "With people living longer lives on oxaliplatin, it's important to know more about these neurological side effects so patients and their physicians can make educated choices on how this drug is used, and perhaps suggest ways to limit the damage."

The new study strongly suggests that punch skin biopsies could be an easy and inexpensive way to follow nerve cell degeneration, a crucial prerequisite for testing the effectiveness of drugs currently in development to trace, prevent or slow nerve damage.

"Skin biopsies can be done pretty easily, uniformly and cheaply anywhere, including hospitals, doctors' offices and clinics, and those places can have the tissue sent to Hopkins for analysis," Polydefkis says. "High-quality neurological testing isn't nearly as easy or economical to do, so it's possible that the biopsies could play a pivotal role in bringing neuroprotective drugs to fruition."

Tips For Women's Sports Health Issues You Need To Know ...

Women?s Sports Medicine has become so much more important with the increase in female sports and exercise enthusiasts. Women have to pay close attention to certain issues despite the benefits of physical activity since there are a some risks involved. Sometimes you can handle these yourself with the right information, and sometimes you may need to consult with a doctor such as a sports medicine specialist. The information that follows relates to some health and sports related concerns many women have been affected by that are something to be aware of.

If you as a woman are going to play in sports or exercise regularly you might want to consider finding a sports medicine specialist to be your doctor. Sports medicine specialists aren?t solely for those who sustain an injury as many may think, but also for teaching you how to avoid injuries in many cases. If you have areas that are more problematic for you, such as your knees or back, a sports medicine doctor can give you proper advice on treating and preventing recurrence of these conditions.

These are of course the doctors who will prescribe the best course of treatment for serious injuries too. Where sports medicine is concerned, you need a physician who is knowledgeable, experienced and holds a good reputation in this field.

Body image issues often cause girls and women to work out too hard and avoid eating enough to give their body the nutrients it needs. A condition that can develop from this poor self image problem is anorexia or bulimia in which the person is severely obsessed with losing weight to the point of starving themselves. These conditions are most prevalent in sports where being thin is especially emphasized such as gymnastics and figure skating. There are some real dangers to being very active when you are too thin just as there are with being too fat. For the most part this is a psychological issue although it does have some pretty sever medical consequences.

Women who engage in regular exercise to improve their health and weight may face special challenges in the lower body. If your goal is to shed some pounds in the leg, stomach or hip area there are of course many exercises that can help. Perhaps the best approach is to engage in regular strenuous exercise such as circuit training that offers both aerobic and anaerobic exercises. What this means is that you need to alternate between comfortable exercise motion and intense paces to increase your hearth and breathing rates above normal. The activities described above will force you to push your body to increase your fat burning power and your metabolism.

With women becoming more active in the same activities as men it?s no surprise that women?s sports medicine is growing quickly. It?s good to be aware of issues that women face in these activities so that you can get the maximum benefits and avoid injuries. Being aware of the above issues is only half the battle, it is also a good idea to have a reliable doctor that specializes in this area.

Will Hollywood's fur ban spread?

West Hollywood bans the sale of fur clothing. Will more California cities follow?

After 25 years away, I returned to the LSE and had a great time. Both the International Growth Center and the Department of Geography and the Environment were wonderful hosts. It was great to see old friends at the LSE Economics Department and to try to recall who I was at the age of 20 as I was starting my research career.
Switching gears, I want to pay homage to my friend Gernot Wagner. Good PR people are now pushing bloggers to notice his book and I reproduce a quote below that I received. Today's NY Times has an article that Gernot would have something smart to say about. West Hollywood is a funky town about 5 miles east of UCLA. This community (which is LA's Greenwich Village) has banned fur clothing sales. Could this action set off a chain reaction such that fur creatures are protected? Gernot and I would say, "no". The town's leaders know this but they seek to make a statement.

Skip to next paragraph Matthew Kahn

Mathew is an economics professor at UCLA and has written three books: Green Cities (Brookings Institution Press); Heroes and Cowards (Princeton University Press, jointly with Dora L. Costa); and in fall 2010, Climatopolis: How Our Cities Will Thrive in the Hotter World (Basic Books).

Recent posts

?This is a tiny city, so it?s mostly symbolic,? said Councilman John D?Amico, who sponsored the fur ban. ?I think the impact will be heard from here to Fifth Avenue. People will talk about what a fur ban means in a new way.?
So, this is a new case of the "boycott". Since the coat you wear is observed in public, the people of West Hollywood can use shame and ostracism to enforce this new social norm. But, I doubt that neighboring Beverly Hills people will change their behavior. In fact, they may buy more fur coats if they think that the price may drop.
Here is the PR blurb for Gernot's book.
"In But Will the Planet Notice?: How Smart Economics Can Save the World (Oct 2011) Gernot Wagner, an economist at the Environmental Defense Fund, shows that the solution to climate instability will not be found in science, politics, or even activism?guiding market forces in the U.S. and around the world is the only solution. Wagner had a terrific op-ed in the New York Times tied directly to the book, titled ?Going Green but Getting Nowhere?. The piece was the Times? #2 most emailed story that day and has been attracting many reader responses."

los-angeles-nfl-stadium-e1312984478397

As AEG?s proposed stadium, which would be built in downtown Los Angeles, continues to systematically clear a long string of hurdles, the folks behind the competing project in the City of Industry continue to push their proposal forward.

As recently reported by the Whittier Daily News, a group of former NFL players, state officials, and local officials recently spoke out in favor of the City of Industry venue, which would be built by Ed Roski.? They made their case at a meeting of the Four Corners Coalition, a nonprofit group that supports projects that benefit Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties in California.

?This is the perfect area and location for a stadium, because this is where the people live,? San Bernardino County Supervisor Gary Ovitt said.? ?If I had a choice between driving downtown on a Sunday and watching the game in my home, guess what?? I?m going to stay home; most people would.?

The former NFL players who appeared at the event included Marvin Smith, Reggie Berry, C.R. Roberts, Amon Arnold, Frank Rice, Ron Brown and Steve Wright.? Smith pointed to the fact that the City of Industry site permits traditional tailgating.

?I just think tailgating is a great experience, and I can?t wait to take my son to a tailgate party since I can?t play anymore,? Smith said.

Still, Roski?s proposal faces an uphill climb, even though it?s shovel-ready.? The NFL is believed to prefer the glitz of a downtown stadium.

Jagger takes a risk with SuperHeavy (AP)

NEW YORK ? Mick Jagger and Eurythmics founder Dave Stewart acknowledge that they took a gamble when they decided to form their all-star band, SuperHeavy. They had no idea if all the group's members, which include soulful singer-songwriter Joss Stone, Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman and reggae singer Damian Marley, would even have chemistry.

"We were just making music and if we didn't like it, we wouldn't use it," Stewart said. "We just did it because we wanted to do an experiment, and that got developed and more and more developed until in the end, this record appeared."

The result is a 12-track, self-titled album with a sound the group's members say cannot be placed into any specific genre. Jagger's legend was formed with the Rolling Stones and other successful musical collaborations, but he says none of that can be compared to his experience with SuperHeavy.

"Every time you get into a room even with the same people, it is different because people come up with different things. It was a really interesting collaboration. To be honest it was easy. It was really easy because we got things straight away. You are very soon encouraged," he said.

Jagger, Stewart, Stone and Rahman recently sat down for an interview with The Associated Press, where they discussed everything from writing together to egos and joked about sex, drugs and rock `n' roll.

AP: What were you looking for in picking members of this group?

Jagger: One thing serious that we did think about, we didn't want people with loads of entourages and that would have too big of egos. ... It is very quickly how human beings sort of adjust to each other's temperaments and creativity. It is just like being in a cocktail party with a group of people. Either the cocktail party is going to go well or it doesn't. It depends on the vibe.

Rahman: I don't know why they called me, first of all. I thought maybe they wanted my piano playing or my keyboard, or a string arrangement.

AP: Musically, you were all pushed, working outside of your usual genres. Mick, you rapped?

Jagger: I was just copying Damian. I do a little bit. I went toasting, we call it, but it is the same thing (as rap). Damian was doing this really good toasting, West Indian rapping, so I thought, "I could do that. It can't be that difficult." It actually was quite difficult. With a bit of practice, it is all right. It is a laugh.

Stone: It is funny. Sometimes listening to Damian talk would give me a melody. ... It helped when I couldn't come up with anything, I would just listen to Damian and have a little chat in the corner.

AP: What was that first recording session like, getting all of these people together with different sounds from different backgrounds?

Jagger: The night before I said to Dave ... "Is this really stupid?" We always have songs going into projects. We make up songs when we are there. That is great, but we always have songs finished going in. I said, "We are going into this thing we have talked about for the last three months or whatever, and we don't have any finished songs." Dave said, "I know. It is really worrying." But then Dave created this whole raison d'etre why we didn't have songs. The raison d'etre for why we didn't have songs was because if we had songs ... people would feel that it wasn't their project as much. People wouldn't participate and give as much, which is true. So we were all thrown in the deep end.

Stewart: What is unusual is having five writers who are songwriters, known for songwriting, all writing in the same room together at the same time. Writers are often known to be on their own, looking at the sea, out the window, with a pen or playing piano on their own. Then you have five people all staring at each other that are all used to writing songs, but that have to do it in front of each other now.

AP: With all of these people writing, where there any divas? Who wins out?

Jagger: Joss and I did quite a lot of duets, so Joss would have a verse and then we would sing the chorus together and Damian would have a rap and we would come back together for the chorus. This is quite conventional so we followed those ? in some places we followed those conventions, or we made up our own conventions.

AP: All these musicians working together ? was there sex, drugs and rock `n' roll?

Jagger: For Joss there was lots of sex (laughs). She is the only woman so she has her pick. That is the sex part. Rock `n' roll, yes. There was definitely rock `n' roll and drugs. I leave that mostly to Dave and A.R. I think.

Stone: A.R. was big on the drugs. Damian was tame. He was in there doing yoga and drinking wheatgrass or whatever it is called (laughs).

Britishisms: cataloging how they're infecting American English.

Illustration by Robert Neubecker. Click image to expand. This summer, journalist Matthew Engel took to the BBC website to bemoan the corrupting influence of U.S. words on British English. Readers were invited to weigh in with their picks for the worst of the worst, and within a day, nearly 1,300 had responded, with nominations including Can I get a ??, 24/7, and deplane. ("Johnson"?the Economist's language blogger?pointed out that most of the entries weren't Americanisms at all, but rather clich?s, neologisms, or merely expressions that happened to annoy the complainer.)

This narrative should sound familiar. In fact, the language historian Dennis Baron pointed out recently that Brits have been whining about "Americanisms" at least since 1781, when John Witherspoon coined the term. So it may shock you to learn that British words and expressions have, of late, been worming their way into the American lexicon as much as the other way around.

The proposition is hard to prove, so I'll start with two examples, both tied to specific news events. In May 2001, Chandra Levy, a congressional intern ? well, what did she do? Disappeared was the traditional choice, and it was fine as far as it went. After thousands of iterations, however, the word seemed a little threadbare, and its vaudeville-magic-act associations ever harder to ignore. Perhaps that's why, on May 18, Helen Kennedy wrote this sentence for the next day's New York Daily News (I put relevant terms here and elsewhere in italics):

"Police don't know exactly when Levy went missing, but that was the last E-mail or phone call anyone got from her."

Go missing had been used for several decades in the United Kingdom; the Levy case marked the beginning of its ascendance here.

A scant two years later, it became clear that the United States would invade Iraq. Months passed; we did not invade. Then we did. Journalists again faced a question: what to call that preliminary period? In September 2003, the New York Times' Thomas Friedman chose a Britishism to offer a collective answer that now appears inevitable, referring to "how France behaved in the run-up to the Iraq war."

I said that the influx of Britishisms is hard to prove, but some helpful metrics do exist. Google Ngram can measure the relative frequency with which a word or phrase appears in various corpi of books and periodicals. The graph below, for example, shows the frequency of the run-up to in British English (blue line) and American English (red line) between 1980 and 2008. Note that American use increased about 1,000 percent, with the sharpest rise between 2003 and 2005.

And the following chart shows a nearly infinite hike in American use of went missing from 1980 to 2008, with the bulk of it coming between 2001 and the present:

Ben Yagoda is a professor of English at the University of Delaware and the author most recently of Memoir: A History. He contributes to the Chronicle of Higher Education's new blog about language and writing, Lingua Franca, and is working on a book called How To Not Write Bad.

BUILD YOUR SELF ESTEEM, A STARTER GUIDE TO SELF ...

BUILD YOUR SELF ESTEEM, A STARTER GUIDE TO SELF IMPROVEMENT

So how do you stay calm, composed and maintain self esteem in a tough environment? Here are some tips you may to consider as a starter guide to self improvement.

Imagine yourself as a Dart Board. Everything and everyone else around you may become Dart Pins, at one point or another. These dart pins will destroy your self esteem and pull you down in ways you won?t even remember. Don?t let them destroy you, or get the best of you. So which dart pins should you avoid?

Dart Pin #1 : Negative Work Environment
Beware of ?dog eat dog? theory where everyone else is fighting just to get ahead. This is where non-appreciative people usually thrive. No one will appreciate your contributions even if you miss lunch and dinner, and stay up late. Most of the time you get to work too much without getting help from people concerned. Stay out of this, it will ruin your self esteem. Competition is at stake anywhere. Be healthy enough to compete, but in a healthy competition that is.

Dart Pin #2: Other People?s Behavior
Bulldozers, brown nosers, gossipmongers, whiners, backstabbers, snipers, people walking wounded, controllers, naggers, complainers, exploders, patronizers, sluffers? all these kinds of people will pose bad vibes for your self esteem, as well as to your self improvement scheme.

Dart Pin #3: Changing Environment
You can?t be a green bug on a brown field. Changes challenge our paradigms. It tests our flexibility, adaptability and alters the way we think. Changes will make life difficult for awhile, it may cause stress but it will help us find ways to improve our selves. Change will be there forever, we must be susceptible to it.

Dart Pin #4: Past Experience
It?s okay to cry and say ?ouch!? when we experience pain. But don?t let pain transform itself into fear. It might grab you by the tail and swing you around. Treat each failure and mistake as a lesson.

Dart Pin #5: Negative World View
Look at what you?re looking at. Don?t wrap yourself up with all the negativities of the world. In building self esteem, we must learn how to make the best out of worst situations.

Dart Pin #6: Determination Theory
The way you are and your behavioral traits is said to be a mixed end product of your inherited traits (genetics), your upbringing (psychic), and your environmental surroundings such as your spouse, the company, the economy or your circle of friends. You have your own identity. If your father is a failure, it doesn?t mean you have to be a failure too. Learn from other people?s experience, so you?ll never have to encounter the same mistakes.

Sometimes, you may want to wonder if some people are born leaders or positive thinkers. NO. Being positive, and staying positive is a choice. Building self esteem and drawing lines for self improvement is a choice, not a rule or a talent. God wouldn?t come down from heaven and tell you ? ?George, you may now have the permission to build self esteem and improve your self.?

In life, its hard to stay tough specially when things and people around you keep pulling you down. When we get to the battle field, we should choose the right luggage to bring and armors to use, and pick those that are bullet proof. Life?s options give us arrays of more options. Along the battle, we will get hit and bruised. And wearing a bullet proof armor ideally means ?self change?. The kind of change which comes from within. Voluntarily. Armor or Self Change changes 3 things: our attitude, our behavior and our way of thinking.

Building self esteem will eventually lead to self improvement if we start to become responsible for who we are, what we have and what we do. Its like a flame that should gradually spread like a brush fire from inside and out. When we develop self esteem, we take control of our mission, values and discipline. Self esteem brings about self improvement, true assessment, and determination. So how do you start putting up the building blocks of self esteem? Be positive. Be contented and happy. Be appreciative. Never miss an opportunity to compliment. A positive way of living will help you build self esteem, your starter guide to self improvement.

The Active Adults Market Thrives In The Twenty-First Century

Each of the words in the phrase ?active adults? has sufficient semantic independence to prevent the phrase from become a cliche or proprietary brand name. It is not a verbal phrase or idiom. Online searches for the phrase turn up many different concepts, from retirement homes, to magazine titles and free streaming pornography.

But the mysterious glue that sticks words together so that they have meaning as phrases takes some strength from the alliteration and from the juxtaposing of the words to suggest that the phrase does allude to a group of people who may be defined by characteristics of maturity and a predilection for action. These two clear features make the group an interesting target group for marketing people.

A former governor of the American Federal Reserve warned a decade ago that the changing demographic landscape would have dramatic economic consequences as ?baby boomers? retired and expected big pension payouts. Little attention was paid to his words but the economic melt down that has occurred since 2008 is a dramatic manifestation of what he was saying.

Economists and politicians often talk as though they are living in a bygone era. They seem surprised that the demand for housing from young families with young children has shrunk. They talk about the needs to ?create jobs? as though the scenario is now the same as it was in the 1960s when corporations that were limited to drawing on local work forces were able to pay big salaries and fund safe pension funds.

For example, the institution of marriage was instrumental in the demand for family homes, cars and household goods. In aging populations such needs are not as prominent. Many baby boomers have become senile and impotent, and their children seem less fertile and inclined to have families of only one child. This changes the pattern of demand.

People who are told that they must wait longer to reach ?retirement age? whilst facing discrimination in work places on account of their age are not likely to create the same demands. Recent economic events across the world reflect the inadequacy of economic planning. Collapses have been sudden and unexpected. Perhaps it is not fully appreciated that many problems are caused, at least partially by demographic changes. These changes host different patterns of need.

One child families and couples which are downsizing their accommodation do not fuel and endless demand for housing developments of the old type. Instead, they create new demands for different needs. Where vulnerable groups are targeted by predators and abandoned by fast moving families they need secure housing complexes with electric fences and numbers of people who are of similar ages able to laugh at the same jokes and engage in exercise routines suitable for active adults.

Subtle acts reshape military society amid repeal (AP) | Sports, News ...

SAN DIEGO ? Night-long celebrations will mark the final countdown to the historic end of the U.S. military?s ban on openly gay troops, and even more partying will take place once it is lifted Tuesday. But in many ways change is already here.

Countless subtle acts over the past months have been reshaping the military?s staunchly traditional society in preparation for the U.S. armed forces? biggest policy shift in decades. Supporters of repeal compare it to the racial de-segregation of troops more than 60 years ago.

For some gay service members, the fear of discovery and reprisals dissipated months ago when a federal court halted all investigations and discharge proceedings under ?don?t ask, don?t tell,? while military leaders prepared the armed services for its end.

Several have come out to their peers and commanders.

A few have since placed photographs of their same-sex partners on their desks and attended military barbecues and softball games with their significant others. In San Diego, about 200 active-duty personnel ? both gay and heterosexual ? made up the nation?s first military contingency to participate in a Gay Pride march this summer, carrying banners identifying their branches of service. An Army soldier had tears, saying she was touched by the thousands cheering them on, after hiding her identity for so long.

?We?re Gay. Get Over it,? stated the cover page of the Marine Corps Times distributed to bases worldwide a week ahead of Tuesday?s repeal.

The headline offended some but for many troops it echoed their sentiment that repeal is a non-issue for a military that operates by following orders and is busy at war. That sentiment is backed by Pentagon officials who say they have found no evidence the repeal so far has disrupted forces or harmed unit cohesion as predicted by opponents.

Air Force Capt. Diane Cox, whose gay son served in the Navy, said she got into heated debates with service members vowing not to take showers and share rooms with gays before Congress voted to repeal the law, but after the military held sensitivity trainings to explain the new rules ?everybody just shut up.?

Jokes are still told about gay people but the harsh remarks have stopped, she said.

?It?s a new Air Force. I?m really surprised how everything settled down as much as it has,? said the emergency room nurse at Travis Air Force base, near Fairfield in northern California. ?Some of the best, most honorable people have had the military pin medals of honor on them for combat and then they?ve gotten kicked out over this. It?s shameful. I?m glad it?s done.?

Many no doubt will continue to keep their personal lives private. But gay service members say their jobs already feel easier. They no longer use code words or change pronouns in their conversations to protect their careers. The Associated Press interviewed more than a dozen people who are currently in the military or left within recent months about the changes taking place.

Air Force Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach, 42, said the differences may be subtle but the impact is profound. Fehrenbach came out on national TV in 2009 after the Air Force started discharge proceedings, which were later stalled by the repeal process. He reported for duty two days later and was congratulated by colleagues.

?I realized this was the first time I wouldn?t have to lie. There was a great sense of relief, a great sense of pride that I had never felt before,? said Fehrenbach, who retires from service Oct. 1. ?They?re going to feel that on Tuesday ? every service member who has not come out yet. Even if they choose to keep their private life private, they?re going to have the feeling that a burden has been lifted.?

The United States on Tuesday will join 29 others nations, including Israel, Canada, Germany and Sweden, that allow gay individuals to serve openly in their militaries.

More than 14,000 people were discharged under the 1993 Clinton-era law. President Barack Obama campaigned on the law?s repeal, but efforts stalled in Congress until a federal judge in California last year declared it unconstitutional and briefly blocked its enforcement. Lawmakers in December voted to lift the ban and a federal appeals court overturned the ruling, allowing for a lengthy repeal process monitored by Pentagon officials ? which they said helped ensure the change did not disrupt the military. Obama certified in July that repeal would not harm the military?s ability to fight.

Pentagon officials have spent the past 60 days reviewing policies and benefits to iron out details, including how the repeal will affect housing, military transfers and other health and social benefits.

More than 2 million troops have undergone courses on how to deal with possible scenarios for personnel who may, as examples, witness same-sex partners kissing after a deployed ship comes home or see a gay service member hold hands with someone at the mall.

Some adjustments will take time, Fehrenbach said, like seeing troops with their same-sex partners at military balls ? which is expected to happen in coming months.

?It will be great if some do it,? he said. ?But they should just realize they?ll get some looks. And that?s OK.?

Opponents of the policy change say they worry service members who oppose homosexuality are the ones who will get looks or even get punished by receiving less important assignments or postings, discouraging them from expressing their views.

?I am concerned that some soldiers or military personnel who hold orthodox views about sexuality will no longer feel comfortable attending balls or military functions. Will those persons not be seen as team players or will they be marginalized in some way because they no longer feel comfortable doing the things they were comfortable doing?? said retired Army Col. Ron Crews of Grace Churches International, which has endorsed 20 active-duty chaplains. All chaplains need to be sponsored by a church organization to be in the military.

Crews said the rules are unclear: Chaplains wonder whether they can deny gay service members wanting to sing in the chapel choir or teach in Sunday school as they are allowed to do in their civilian churches. Will they have to invite same-sex partners on retreats as part of the military?s strong bonds program that helps couples dealing with the hardship of deployments, or will they face punishment if they refuse?

Crews says if his chaplains counseled same-sex couples on such retreats they would be in violation of their denominational understanding of marriage, and could have their endorsement revoked and be discharged.

?There are many ramifications of this policy change that are yet to be seen,? he said. ?What we?ve told our chaplains is that they?ve got to be very clear with their commanders about what they can and cannot do in this environment.?

Gay marriage is one of the thornier issues.

An initial move by the Navy earlier this year to train chaplains about same-sex civil unions in states where they are legal was shelved after more than five dozen lawmakers objected. The Pentagon is reviewing the issue.

Military officials also say the disparity in benefits between gay married couples and heterosexual couples also must be addressed.

Gays and lesbians will share the same barracks and bathroom facilities as other troops. But those legally married will be treated differently from heterosexual married couples when it comes to assigned housing, relocation packages and some other benefits.

Lance Cpl. Anthony Hernandez, who is stationed at Twentynine Palms in the desert northeast of San Diego, said Marines are still divided over the issue, with opponents worried openly gay Marines will dilute the Corps? tough image.

?The way I think of it, if you?re willing to put your life on the line for your country, then what?s the problem if you?re gay? the 20-year-old father said.

Hernandez?s older brother, Danny, was discharged under ?don?t ask, don?t tell? in 2010.

?I cried about it,? Hernandez said. ?I didn?t know why I was crying. It wasn?t because I found out it he was gay. It was more about the discharge, about what he would do with his life now. I knew he always wanted to be a Marine like me.?

Danny Hernandez plans to apply to re-enlist after celebrating Tuesday.
